Sticking Air Valve

Hi

Has anyone got a cure for a sticking carb air valve? One of mine has started sticking for some reason and I can't actually find anything wrong. I've tried working it up and down repeadtedly which does free it, but when the car has stood overnight it sticks again. Any one else had this problem? The carbs have only done just over 20,000 miles so I don't really want to replace them!

I encountered this problem last time I had my dashpots apart

I've always understood that pots and airvalves are finely matched to give a good seal but I must admit and the purists will go OH NO!!!...I gave mine a bit of a rub with really fine wire wool and WD40.

Seemed to work though. Maybe you should wait for some more responses

With Strombergs, you dont need a tight fit as the diaphragm seals in the air, unlike SU carbs where they need careful polishing/honing to get a perfect fit. Its OK to polish out any high spots with fine abrasive. I would also check that the diaphragm is installed properly, and is in good order. I take it you have oil in the dash pots?

Hi David and VMad,

many thanks for the replies. I didn't know that I could use an abrasive on the air valves like wire wool or similar without harming them . The diaphragms are virtually new and I have plenty of oil in (engine oil). I'll get it apart and see what a little mild abrasive does. Strange how it should suddenly start sticking:?
