    Injection fuel tank woes

    Hi all,

help needed. My RV8 EFI stag needs help.

The fuel tank was condemed and so i have purchased a new one.

On taking out the tank mounted pump i saw that the swirl pot was

mounted to one side.surely the point of a swirl pot is to ensure a

    constant supply.

    Three questions

    do i need a swirl pot ?

If so where do i get one .Also the old one is larger than the fuel sender hole.

Any ideas on coating the inside of the tank to make it last,

    thanks in advance Martin.

    Martin.

Sorry cannot help with the Swirl pot but I have used POR15 from Frosts. Some years ago I built a kit car. I had to move the petrol filler and blank off existing hole in the tank. My welding was not 100% petrol proof but the POR15 sorted that. From what I remember you pour it in slosh it around and drain the excess.

I dont really understand your problem. If your car was working OK before, why cant you just change the tank and re-use the old pump? Also, I dont see why you should need a swirl pot.

My car had the injection pump and I fitted it in the Stag normal position, and worked OK for a while but eventually failed after leaving standing for a few months. I think it did not have the 'suck' ability to lift the fuel so it needed mounting lower down. Yours should be OK in the tank.

        Hi Martin,

I have been considering fuel injection as an option on my RV8 and have collected the relevant parts.

Amongst the parts I bought on good old flea bay was a modified rover sd1 fuel pump, the chap had shortened it to fit into his fuel tank, So as I see it... as the pump can get as much fuel as it wants you dont need a swirl tank. I will probably end up the efi route eventually and appreciate that I will need to cut an additional hole in the tank to accomodate fuel pump.

        Anyway ramble over.....good luck.

In my experience a swirl pot is a must,as it reduces the strain on the pump if it runs dry, even momentarily and prevents those embarassing cut-outs when you are manouvering in a "spirited" manner.

It alsohas a beneficial effect on cooling the returned fuel, depending on how your return pipe is positioned in the pot.

You can get external pots though that fit in the engine bay....

The Bosch pumpwhen fitted to the SD1 Rover was mounted under the passenger floor and was supplied direct from the base of the swirl pot using a 1/2" bore pipe - it didn't have the ability to suck if the fuel level was below the pump inlet so was effectively gravity fed from the pot - the pot was able to maintain a good head of fuel as the return was fed directly into the pot and therefore backto the pump so was absolutely essential to the system.

I may well not need the Por15 kit which i was going to treat my old tank with .I have just bought the tank i pm'ed you about from Les clarkas it is an original ,if it is in good condition inside the Por 15 is up for sale and so is the new rimmer tank i bought.

            Cheers Steve

I'm fitting efi to my TV8 over the winter and will definitelybe fitting a swirl pot, The stag tank is wide and flat and is has no baffles. This is confirmed by the flashing of the low fuel light when the tank is anything under 1/2 full. As the admirable Kryton as already explained EFI pumps need to be gravity fed and never allowed to run dry. I have bought a Bosche pump and got a new Stag tank off Ebay a couple of weeks ago. The plan is to weld a small swirl pot underneath the tank and feed the pump from there.
