    CV jointed prop shaft

    Hi All,

I know this has been discussed before with regard to fitting the CV jointed shaft as fitted to the SD1. I bought one of these and kept it in the garage after everyone mentioning them last year. When I had my gearbox rebuilt and new clutch etc I decided to fit the new CV jointed shaft. It is all tightend up and the flanges are pulled up flat. My problem is that at around 2000 revs there is a vibration. This is still there in freewheel with the car out of gear and the clutch in either position.

Has any one fitted one of theses shafts and found it to be out of balance from new? My next step will be to refit the old one as see if the problem is solved.

    Any info would be helpful.

Hi Tony, I have a special prop because of the bmw diff and it has an sd1 joint at the front. I don't get any vibration. I know it's not the same prop but the angles must be similar so fundamentally it should be ok. The joint was very dry so I had it greased and balanced at a prop specialists a couple of years after I got it.

      Thanks Steve,
This should be ok as it is new and I know Neil has used them, I have found a company who will balance it, if needed, for £48. I wonder if they could also look at the greasing of it if needed. I just wondered really if any one had bought one that was faulty from new!!

I bought one from Rimmers that was faulty from new - the joints were shot so I sent it back and got a full refund. I since fitted one I had made from the original tubing and larger joints. I think it's hit and miss on the CV one's some get perfect ones whil others get badly made ones

Thanks Mike, I thought someone had a faulty one!! I have had it over a year, I think, so may not be able to get a refund. I will try the old shaft just to prove it is the shaft and if it is I will have to make a decision on which route to go. I must say though that the old shaft hadn't given me any problems that I could detect so it may be a case of just refitting it and not fixing what is not broken !!!! Thanks for the reply

            Hi Tony,
Rimmers are normally pretty good on faulty stuff so even if it's technically out of guarantee they may still offer a refund if it's not been used until now.
Clearly there were some faulty ones and mine was one but as you also say your old one maybe fine and quite possibly just needs re-balancing.

            hope you get it sorted
