Revcounter fault

Hi Guys,
The revcounter has never worked properly since I have owned the car. It works at tick over on start up fine, then will rise with the engine speed till it reaches 2000 rpm, then drops to zero and refuses to work again until next time you restart the engine.
I brought a reconditioned one last week but it works the same as the original one , ( drops to zero after 2000 rpm ) . The car is fitted with electronic ignition. Has anyone any thoughts.

is your car a mk1,i think some people do have trouble with electronic ignition on mk1,try fitting mk2 guage

If you fit a Mk II tacho (or have a Mk I modified), you also have to modify the wiring to Mk II arrangement. On a Mk I, the coil LT feed is through the tacho (current sensing). To convert to Mk II, you must connect together the original connectors that were on the back of the tacho (to feed directly to the coil) and arrange a lead from the distributor side of the coil to the tacho (it is voltage sensing).

If your electronic ignition is not wired correctly, it can cause the rev counter to play up. Check to see how it is powered - if it is (incorrectly) connected to the coil + try connecting it (correctly) to a proper power supply, e.g. at the inertia switch. On the Lumenition it is the red wire.
But, of course, it could just be a bad earth.

I had similar faults with my mk1 tacho with electronic ign' fitted.

It needs connecting to a laptop(connection supplied) to set it up+an extra wire from the coil,,but I found it quite straight forward..The guy was quick to respond to any questions.Great service.
It has worked perfectly ever since,and keeps the mk1 look on the dashboard,shame about my other dials,I have a mixture.
