    Brake lights

    Hopefully this should be simple!

I recently got my Stag back from having some bodywork done on it.

Fortunately my wife was driving behind me as I brought the car back home.
She noticed that the brake lights were not coming on.
It's good to find out that way, rather than in a different way on a roundabout etc!

    So my questions are:

Do the brake lights normally come on even with no key in the ignition / with ACC and IGN / only with IGN ?

Is the switch at the footbrake an earthing one?

And if the answer to the previous Q is yes - then is there a permanent live fed to the brake light whilst the earth side goes through the pedal switch?

Many thanks for any contributors !

    Steve

Not sure this is a Mk2 wiring diagram?

I have an early Mk2 UK spec and AFAIK does not have a dimming relay?

1 only with the ign 2 No 3 the brake light switch just breaks the green live. The switch is threaded and can be adjusted.

Mine is a late 1972 build Mk2 and it does have the dimming relay.

My late '73 build, almost last of the early Mk2 (Mk1.5) had the dimming relay until I removed it.

Thanks to all for your input - I now have an odd question....

What's a dimming relay for/ what does it do??

              Cheers!

Dims the stop lights when the sidelights are on, as if they need it

I'm pretty sure it dims the rear indicator lamps as well.

In the old days before we had so many street lights and megabright xenon car headlights, it was thought that the rear lights might dazzle following drivers at night, so the nice designers at Standard-Triumph incorporated a relay to dim the rear-facing lamps at night.

It's a cloaking device so no one can see you in the dark. Bypass it.

Well you learn something new every day!
So .... back to my problem ....

the switch at the footbrake should have IGN sent to it then? At least that should be an easy task to handle (even me).

Such a downer! Haven't seen the car in months and now its too dangerous to drive!

Just a couple of weeks ago during one of my many electrical dilemas I could not get the back lights to go out pulled the wires on light switch still no joy after much head scratching realised it was the brake lights that were on the switch was a plastic one and it had disintergrated CRAP so I purchased one of these now fitted proper job and less than a tenner

Actually - you don't realise how important those bright red lamps are.
I had a friend of mine following me in a mini once and - to show how subconscious it is - he kept almost crashing into me from behind (maybe I should re word that) - but he got frustrated each time he was having a near miss and it took him a while to realise the lack of lights.

I just hope that the issue is not between the 'inside' of the switch and a loom
