    Overdrive Switch intermittenty not working

Here we go, let's hope this isn't another "Header tank" question , cos life is too short 😄

My overdrive is engaging intermittently, so starting at the easy end I'm working down from the switch , to the twin wires.
I've looked in books etc , but can't find the answer ( apols this is a stupid question but ) how do you remove the flick switch on the gear lever........I last did this 21 yrs ago ,and since then I've put two kids through uni, weddings, houses and stil they want my money 😄 but the stress has addled what little brain I have left , sorry that last bit was so therapeutic
    How dyu remove the switch

Off to bed now , will have a look in the morning , nite nite ,God bless

    Dave.
( sorry Lambretta man , forgot to put my real name on , Mrs Hoskins is my 70 veedub )

Hi, use a suitable flat screw driver, there is a small square(ish) cut out either at the front or rear of the plastic cap, just insert and prise off?

No need for embarrassment - they can be bloody tight and you could be forgiven for thinking that it won't come off. It should be at the back and you may need quite a strong screwdriver but just insert it and twist, harder and harder

I'd put money on your problem being related to the wiring up or near the gearlever.

        Good luck.

        Cheers

The problem last time ( 1996) was dirty wiring terminals at the bottom of the gear lever. I could get to it in 96 , trouble is I'm 20 yrs less flexible now. I can get under there, but might never get out

Can we go back to header tanks now, that was so much fun, better than the Archers

Archers? As in, you can miss out 5 years worth of episodes but the story and the characters are still the same?

            Yep, sounds like header tanks....

Has anyone died in the Archers in the last 90 zillion years? I gave up listening around about the time of Nigel and Mr Softee

Ive had bother with the gearstick wiring on a couple of occasions now first time due to the routing of the cables and slack connector coming unplugged. And second the wires shorting out where they come through the side of the gearstick.

Ive now fitted new wired and cut off the old connectors and fitted tighter fitting bullet terminals

Quick summary of the Archers since 1952, Nigel fell of the roof, the Bulls been flooded,16 times, Peggy's very worried, Bobbys been shot, Shula changed her name cos it's just weird, and Dots started smoking again.......or was that Emmerdale ?
Anyway, back to these expansion tanks

The wire in the gear lever can fracture and give intermittent operation. Take the wire out and see if you can 'stretch' each core (pulling on the terminals each end). If one or other core stretches, then the copper has fractured inside.

If you need to refit the gear knob, only do up the internal ring nut until it is flush with the end of the lever itself. Then nip up the chrome nut underneath the knob. If you do the inner ring up too tight it's likely to short on the switch connections and blow the fuse - giving more overdrive grief!

I've not listened to the Archers since University - and that was a long time ago, so thanks for the one-line update!

                    Cheers,
                    Mike.

Thanks Mike, that's really helpful, that's a job for tonight. I've bought a new switch and leads , so will fit them anyway. I'm assuming it's electrical as the fault is intermittent , and when it works , it engages and disengages fine. ( although it's never failed to disengage, only engage ....if that makes sense !!!)

Anyway , the Bulls flooded again, and Nelson Gabrial is dead
