    D Rubber Under Cam Cover

    Hi All,

My mate with his MKII Stag decided to Remove the Triumph Cam Covers for Refurb today.
Unfortunately one of the D Rubbers fell in. Will he have to remove sump to find rubber d thing ?

Also looking at the Photos he sent me there looks to be some Damage ?

I hope someone can help my Mate Andy

    Best Regards, Nick

Looks like the left bank one? Out of the two it is the better one to lose. It could still cause grief though - if it has found its way past the timing chains, and into the sump section it won't do any harm - however if it is still lurking in the timing chest, and you can see it, sharpen up a long stiff wire (welding rod?) and spear it to pull it back out. That's what I did last time it happened to me.

If it gets caught in the chains when the engine is running, the snatch on the chain as it is pulled round the crankshaft sprocket could cause some serious damage...

Are you sure, or are you just feeling lucky

There doesn't appear to be any damage but I'm guessing that you aren't aware that the cam sprockets can be attached to the support bracket (that can be seen most clearly in the second pic ) in order to preserve the cam timing whenever the heads are removed.

The lock tabs need bending over as well. Looks like one has snapped off - probably find that in the sump as well!

As the guys have said, if you can get your hands on a boroscope to help locate it might help if you cant get it with the welding rod idea you can get one of those tools with a claw that opens and closes.

Should the bracket be bent over the Bolt ?

                Nick,

Use one of the camshaft nuts (or a spare) and secure the cam sprocket bolt to the bracket. The bracket will be pulled towards the cam sprocket, then when the cam sprocket securing bolts are undone it will draw the sprocket away from the camshaft and hold it in position. This maintains the tension on the chain so that replacement should be straightforward. The method is described in detail in both the ROM and Haynes.

Don't think so, I can see the top one in position OK.

Not in normal use. As DJT says when servicing valve clearances etc. then the bracket goes over thread and is secured with a nut to keep the timing chains in check.
