No foot on the clutch, puts load on crank thrusts making starter work harder and wear on bearings.

I only do that if the car had been left for a few weeks/months. Usually depress the throttle, pull out choke, foot off the throttle, ignition on, wait for pump to stop clicking and turn the key. Usually fires within one or two revolutions.

In my opinion turning the engine over on the starter until the oil oressure comes up everytime puts unnecessary strain on the starter, battery, alternator and wiring. If you are only doing a couple of thousand miles a year then the wear will be minimal especially as the oil should have been changed annually. At that rate it will be decades before the engine needs a rebuild. However if you crank it over to get the oil pressure up everytime you ciuld be replacing starters, batteries and possibly worn out ring gears on the flywheel. It is worth doing as I said after a long lay up or first start after oil filter change. The more important thing is not to rev the engine until the oil has got round, and don't thrash it until it has warmed up a bit.

Yes foot on clutch, reduces load put on by gearbox and cold oil.

If loading your thrust bearings by depressing clutch puts a load on starter, you have real problems.

In the context of the original post/question then surely no clutch would be better as depressing the clutch will load up the thrust bearing before oil pressure has built up. It's not a problem for me because 1. I do not bother cranking to get the oil pressure and 2. Mine is an auto

If I turn the starter with the clutch pedal depressed the engine turns a little more slowly which suggests to me that depression of the clutch increases the load on the starter, althought I wouldn't have the slightest idea why that should be

I just wonder why owners treat Stag any different to any other car I cant remember any cars in the 70's or any other time come to that that I sat in them ponceing around turning them over till the oil light went out holding clutches down ( sorry John) or whatever. I just got in started them and went to work, to which I was always late so they never got warmed up very gently either

I quite agree with you there Graham - mind you I can't say I have ever bothered to cut up a dirty oil filter either

My method from fully cold: clutch pedal depressed first. Pull out choke fully. Lift clutch pedal. Crank starter just a few times. Crank second time always fires up immediately. Push choke part way in as soon as engine will blip cleanly and close off choke fully within first few minutes/mile. I have electronic ignition fitted which might make a difference.

Most new cars won't start unless you have the clutch pedal depressed.....

With the Stag, I just get in, pull the choke out full with foot on accelerator to relieve tension on the LH carb choke cable, release the accelerator and spin the engine. It usually starts first time, then push the choke in about halfway and drive off. Push the choke all the way in as soon as the car will run without it.

ISTR that is exactly the method described in the handbook...............

Very true Dave. Despite what I was taught, I never depress the clutch on the Stag.

Jump in, choke out, key in, turn key, wait for fuel pump to stop, turn key more till the bugger fires up, push choke back in so the revs are about 1000, seat belt on, clutch in, 1st gear, clutch out slowly, drive off, turn around and go back to lock Garage!!
