    oil filter and oil capacity

    Hi all,

Been a SOC member for 12 years but this is my first venture onto the forum. I am a pen pusher so excuse the very very basic question. I have decided to do my first oil change on my Stag. It has an original Triumph V8 engine with a paper filter fitted. I Intend buying some oil and a filter tomorrow, hopefully.
    1. What filter do I need
    2. how much oil do I need?
I intend buying a good quality mineral oil 20/50. Naturally I want to make sure I buy the right filter.
    3. Will I be able to get the right filter from Halfords?

Well done for taking the plunge, Carnut,

Am doubtful that Halfords will still stock the filters, or the VR1. Try Peter at LD Part for the filter ( http://ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c=...0e3613f00c8db2 ) - he's very choosy about what he stocks. The previous frequently used supplier of VR1 have ceased stocking it, so suggest you google Valvoline VR1. Many members recommend this for its zinc compound additive, which is kinder to the Stag overhead cam arrangement. It also apparently gives better oil pressure (my first fill is still in containers in the garage, so I can't confirm .... yet).

        Good luck

        Jonno

PS, put a rubber band over the cuffs of your shirt/ overalls when you take the filter off, otherwise you'll find oil trickling towards your armpits . Also, thin latex or poly gloves to keep used oil off your hands are useful.
White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

Better still, once you loosen the nut on the original filter housing, or loosen the spin on filter, wrap a plastic bag (shopping bag will do) around the filter and then take it off. With care, not a drop of oil will fall out of the bag.

Tesco bags have holes in the bottom. Co-op bags don't.

Many thanks to all who responded to my first post. Think I'll give Halfords a miss today and order some supplies on line as suggested. The replies have contained some really useful tips - many thanks
