    stub axle question

    Hi wise ones,

I am refitting the front hubs, with new bearings, back onto the car. I wiped the excess grease off the stub axle and noticed these areas of roughness. The left axle has numbers which haven't been worn away so maybe the axles are normal?

If they are ok, I will keep going....

    Cheers from snowy Canada

The one in pictures 1 & 2 don't look too clever Tanya. How does the outer bearing feel when its placed on it ?

      Hi Ian,
I put the hubs on, tightened the castle nut hand tight and backed off to allow the cotter pin. I don't have a torque wrench that goes to 5 lbs ft. It all seems pretty good. I can't move the hubs back and forth. New D washers used.

There wasn't a problem before, and the club mechanic was pretty happy with the state of the old bearings.
      Cheers

The only reason I raised the point was it looks like a bearing may have run live on the outer end in the past and chewed it up a little. ( It maybe just how it looks in the photo) If the new bearing isn't loose on the stub then it should be OK

        Ian.

            Tanya,

To measure 5 lb ft or any small torque settings, nick some of your husbands fishing scales, the sort that is a spring balance and has a hook and a handle. Then place your T handle from your socket set with the handle pushed through the hub to max, put the socket of the correct size on it and engage with the appropriate bolt or nut. Place the spring balance on the end of the bar where the ball bearing is to prevent it pushing through the hub, (commonly at 12" or putting it another way...a foot), now pull down or up (depends upon which way tighten is) on the spring balance until the gauge reads 5 lb. Tarraaaa you now have imposed a load of 5 lbs at 1 ft that's where the saying comes from.
Because the connection to the bolt is at one end there is a small degree of effort applied by the diminishing static weight of the handle but so little as to be ignored with no ill affect.

ok, having thought about this a bit more, of course the wheel bearings don't run on the rough areas! Doh! Live and learn.

PS, putting on the brake calipers was a work out....open the wine

Key thing to bear in mind is that you don't want the inner bearing race to rotate (slip) on the shaft - if this has been happening you'll probably see some marking on the shaft or surfaces of the old bearings. If in doubt, or even if you just want that extra peace of mind, you can always use some bearing fit (Loctite)
