    Carb adjusting tool

    Hi

Has anyone tried the carb adjusting tool that Paddocks sell? I have replaced my throttle discs with plain ones (no poppet valve) and it now seems to be running a little rich. Goes like hell and runs much better but doesn't like the choke anymore and when I looked at a plug it was blackI believe some adjusting tools are better than others?

    Hi Brian

The couple ive owned (lost thefirst one)have both been similar.

Unscrew the dampers and the tool locates on the slotted groove, screw in clockwise noting how many turns it takes before its fully wound in.If your cars running rich unscrew perhaps going an extra 1/4 turn, set identical on both carbs.

      Hi Mark

Many thanks for replying, it is a big help. I have never adjusted late type Strombergs before so I am in the dark! I have had a few cars with Strombergs but they have all had the early type with the jet adjuster underneath. I'll buy one next weekend and have a go.

      Regards

I've always just used an allen key. Is that wrong...?

          Roger,

The correct tool has the ability to stop the piston turning and ripping the diapragm. Having said that, I too have used an ordinary hex key in the past with success. Just lucky I guess .

Because the CO2 emissions test is much stricter over here than in the U.K. (no allowance is made for older cars) last year using the adjusting tool my carb mixture had to be weakened as far as it would go to get it to pass the Test.
It means I always need full choke to start the car, then push it almost all the way in, and after a mile of driving push it in the final quarter & it runs O.K. from then onwards.
It is not as quick as it used to be, and I could have increased the richness of the mixture afterwards, but I decided to leave it alone, and this year passed the emissions test 1st time.

                Hi Brian,

I bought one of those adjusting tools from Paddocks a couple of months back.

Not sure how near the M56 you are but I travel to the Wirral every day so if you want to borrow mine you're very welcome. If you really want to get your own... no offence

                Regards

                  Hi David

many thanks for the very kind offer of the loan of your carb tool. If you don't mind I'll buy one as I am often 'fiddling' so I'm bound to need it again and again!! I usually need this sort of thing at the worst possible moment, ie I need the car for work the next day and I have disturbed something I should have left alone! I'll learn one day, but at least I now know that the Paddocks tool works.

                  Thanks again

                  Brian

                    Hi Brian

                    No problem

If I'm really honest.... I ended up swallowing my pride andtaking mine to a local trusted garage. He dismantled and set them up for me....cars never sounded or performed better

Hi Roger, I heard somewhere that using an allen key affects the power output - how did your car do vs the others on the enginuity power test day?

You know bl****y well how it did at Enginuity...

Discovered 2 stripped spark plug threads when compression testing - have to say the Time-Sert inserts are great. Fixed in next to no time. Don't know if it has helped with my lack of torque, but at least I can be confident no spark plugs are imminently going to fly out...
