I think I remember reading somewhere recently that the U.K. is bringing in the same Driving License renewal rule that applies in other European Countries (such as Spain & the Canary Isles), whereby every 5 years when your driving license is due for renewal, you have to pass a test to prove you are still fit to drive a car on the roads.
I had to undergo one here in 2014 where you have to keep a car on the road on a moving video screen using both your left and right hands (to test co-ordination), undergo an eyesight test, and answer medical questions about your health.
Despite lots of "beeps" every time I went off the road on the screen test (it's not easy using the left hand to move in one direction and the right hand to move in the opposite direction). I was told I had passed in the end, and got a new license which now lasts until Feb 2019 when I will have to undergo the same thing again.
I am not getting any younger (I will be 76 when the next test is due), and if I can't renew my license I may have to sell the Stag (the misses has her own Honda which she much prefers to drive than the Stag). Surprisingly, although my wife is 10 years younger than I am, she had to undergo the same test as I did at the same time - I think it was because we both swapped from U.K. to Spanish driving licenses the same day.
So - anyone looking for a nice Stag who is prepared to wait till 2019 in the off chance that I won't be allowed to drive again, you could have a nice holiday in Tenerife on a one-way plane ticket, then buy my car, and drive it back to the U.K. (when re-registering onto a U.K. plate you would probably get my old private number back (MXI 124) - which went into a black hole at DVLA when I swapped to a local Canarian registration).
Anyway, after all the waffle back to the question - does any of you older members in the U.K. now have to ondergo a similar test to mine when your license expires?
