CCFS web article - Stag vs. Jag -

Link to Classic Cars for Sale web article comparing the Stag with Jaguar XJS. Hopefully not too controversial!

Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Well it's good that the Stag won but it's crazy to suggest that they were competing for the same customers when they were new. They weren't.

I worked in a JRT (Jaguar Rover Triumph) dealer showroom and I'm sure not one customer considered both cars - the Jag was something like twice the price of the Stag.

    Cheers

For once a Mag. item I agree with.

Although a Jag man since 19 (when I sold the PI) I've never liked to looks of the XJS. The only time I began to warm to it was when they cut the roof off, firstly with the Cabriolet and then the Convertible, but the scuttle shake on that was and is horrendous unless you fitted the stiffening kit. The Stag does not suffer any of those foibles but should only be put up against the Cabriolet if making a fair comparison, in which case the 6 cylinder version (3.6 litre) was better than the heavy V12.

The fusion of these two excellent cars including the best attributes of both is my ultimate aim, if I ever get a 'round tuit', but retaining the Stag's rear seat as it has much more legroom (front seat position dependant). Not that I ever use it of course

            Regards

            Steve

Never seen a Jag engined Stag, although a 3.6 or 4 litre straight six might be interesting?

                Ian,

The AJ6 from an XJ40 was considered right back at the beginning, some 4 years ago, especially as it comes already coupled to the ZF 4 speed which many Stags now have. Problem is I found that someone already did it so it's not enough of a challenge to get me motivated.

I think a better Staguar would be based around the X308 AJV8, but not just the engine and 5 speed box, I'm going for suspension, electronics, ABS, Cruise, Traction, you name it. It actually makes more sense to use parts that match and hook up with each other instead of trying to get parts of it to work with other parts missing.

I have a donor car and a damaged Stag shell which I've been using for feasibility over the last couple of years on and off. It's all do-able but I'll have to wait until I have more time. Mostly it's schemed out. I think the 3.2 will be more than enough on a walk-before-run basis.

                Regards

                Steve
