Hi Steve,to remove the cables from the original operating rod (knob could cause an offence to some people so I think so we'd better not use that) I drilled the 2 dimples out
Choke cable Reapir 1.jpg
which allowed me to remove the old inners and then opened out the aperture with a drill to fit the new cables which I had crimped tighter together in a vice to make them fit into the operating rod easier, then crimped the rod and cables in the vice
Whilst I believe the replacement cables I had were made from stainless and difficult/impossible to solder I used a plenty of flux in the operating rod and heated it with a blow torch and ran solder in the dimples and then clamped the cables in the vice, gave it a good tug and they held OK.
The new outers were cut to length (Dremmel) and a few mm of the PVC sleeving removed and the inner cables slid inside and after opening the outer casing out a little the outers pushed in and I used crimping pairs to clamp them in which is how I think it was originally done. I did consider adding some Wonder Weld to improve fixing but they appeared pretty secure.
The inners were cut to the correct length when they fitted and the ends "sealed" with heat shrink (a tip from Marshman on another thread) to prevent the cable fraying and so far do good.
Hope this helps.
Nigel

Took mine out for it's first run of the year, not started for about three months oil light went out after about five seconds of cranking without choke, choke pulled out fired up straight away. Ignition light went out as rev's applied and off we go.
Clutch release a little noisy but herd worse, temp gauge at eleven o'clock position (fingers crossed) so far so good. Set off up express way going into overdrive in forth ok nice and clean but would not engage in third, after a few miles started to play ball in third as well. Had a good run round the Conwy area, car ran well. Nice to be out and about in the Stag again, looking forward to the summer now.
Here's a few pic's of the run. Chris.

Given that it was the first dry and reasonably mild day, I replaced the steering rack, remains unfinished as I ran out of daylight with the track rod ends still to be tightened up. They were spinning and I had had enough by this point. So popped the wheels back on and still without power steering (I had cut the drive belt so that I could run it without running the pump dry as the rack had dumped all the oil on the garage floor) and parked it back in the garage for the rest of the week where the weather says it will rain all week.
I also discovered that I need to buy more imperial tools. The last car I worked on that needed them was a Talbot Sunbeam about thirty years ago.
I'll probably get the chance to drive it once before taking it off the road for a month when the MOT runs out at the end of April.

Went over to Faversham Classics to see how the restoration of the Mk1 I’m buying is doing. Starting to come together and can’t wait until it’s time to get it on the road for the summer. Hopefully that will be 25th May.You do not have permission to view this gallery.
