After having had to be jump started after local club meeting yesterday evening (not SOC) fitted "new" battery today. Just wish I'd first looked at "Remove and Replace power steering pump " in ROM as far clearer than "Remove/replace Battery"
However job completed rapidly after reading former. Battery I have fitted is a perfectly good one recovered from a terminally ill Renault Scenic that one of my sons scrapped recently. Its the right size but the terminals are reversed so negative is nearest the radiator. Leads were long enough. Problem is I cannot now fit isolator on Negative battery post as no room . Is there a problem with fitting the isolator to the positive post- I can't see one but?

No Neil - the reason you remove negative first (or positive if a pos earth car) is only so if you should strike/touch bodywork when swinging the spanner or socket you are using to undo the terminal you don't get a spark through making an accidental short circuit. A car battery will take a spanner to red heat in seconds.
Purely safe workshop practice and nothing to do with anything else. It is usually the very first thing an apprentice is taught on their first day (and was with all 6 of mine). Perfectly acceptable to use an isolator on a positive terminal, subject to it having suitable insulation/cover of the switchable bit just on pure safety grounds - a lot of isolators are just open bare metal with a knobbed screw to join it - this may pass close to the battery clamp or other earthed part if this is used on a positive terminal. Obviously it would make no difference being open if on the earth side.
The only reason a terminal or isolator would spark while disconnecting is if the car is still drawing a load, so if everything is off, and in good order, nothing should happen

I remember a mechanic (as they were called then) in our workshop absent mindedly putting a spanner on top of a battery on a Minor 1000, its right in the middle of the engine bay at the back, an ideal "shelf", spanner touched both terminals !!!! One hell of a bang, battery exploded showering him with acid and the battery distributed around the workshop. Fortunately he was looking down so he didn't get it on his face, all hell let loose, vast quantities of water thrown over him and he was fine but, boy did he get a B********g, no written warnings then, a very lucky man.
We told the customer what had happened and he was quite happy because he got a new battery, he said there old one was dodgy anyway !!
