    brake system

before I start, please no 'should have gone to specsavers' jokes. about three months ago the master cylinder on my auto stag braking system failed. so I bought a new one off paddocks. I fitted it and put new fluid in, I took the car out yesterday and the brakes seemed out of sorts, with the front near side wheel getting hot and seemed to be binding. checked out everything all seemed in order. Then by chance I looked at the brake fluid bottle I had bought to fill the reservoir up. Yep you guessed it old Richard head here has put in LHM fluid for brake and self levelling systems, now after you've all had time to wipe you eyes. Does anyone know if I have caused permanent dame to all the brake seals, I've started cleaning everything out. going to blow all the pipes out tomorrow, any advice would be welcome, thanks roger.

So easy to do, I'm sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you, no doubt the wise heads will be along soon
    Very best of luck

I would suspect the brake system seals have swollen due to the contamination. I once did the same thing to a tractor clutch system many years ago, but used brake fluid not LHM and it buggered the seals.
Personally I would replace all the seals to be on the safe side.

I second what Neil said and would replace all the seals ,i think that i would also pump some fresh fluid through the system and bleed at all points before replacing the seals to try and remove all traces and potential for further contamination .

Totally agree about bleeding/flushing the system through BEFORE replacing the seals but I would use an Easibleed or vacuum bleed system to avoid any pumping or movement of the seals - especially in the master cylinder. The reason is if the LHM fluid has attacked the seals then you don't want any contamination pushed into the system to make matters worse.

If the seals have been damaged then it would be wise to change the brake hoses as well. You did say the brakes don't feel right and hoses that swell when under pressure will cause the pedal to feel spongy.

thanks for the replies. the brakes actually felt rock solid. have now put new brake fluid in. The problem is now when I open the bleed valves and pump the brake pedal, no fluid is coming through and the reservoir bubbles up in the compartment closest to the bulkhead. I fear the worst as maybe the seals are so knackered they can't pump the fluid.

It is a bit late now but see my post no.5 above. In this intance I would have usdd z vacuum bleeder or even an eazibleed. Hope you get it sorted.

hi roger saw your post at no 5. trouble is its already through the system. small amount of the wrong stuff dribbled out of every bleed valve when I opened them. going to try to blow air through all the pipes in the morning. not the end of the world, I'll just replace the whole system if needs be, just gutted he's running the best ever. many thanks roger.
