New front springs rubbing on turrets.

I have fitted new front springs and shocks. They are springs lowered by 1" so that the ride height is spot on. For some reason, after fitting 2 sets of standard springs, the ride height has been way too high. Anyway, the problem is the springs just very slightly rub inside the turrets and makes a horrible grating noise. I have turned the springs to several positions, obviously started with the bottom tail pointing the correct way but the springs still bend towards the turrets when the suspension deflects. Now getting fed up messing about with the springs.
The only thing I can think of now is to press the part of the turrets away from the point where the springs rub. It doesn't need much. I have put thin rubber between spring and turret and this stops the noise until the rubber gets pushed away. The tiny area of turret only needs pushing a tiny bit. I have also tried standard springs but these rub as well.
Does anybody have any ideas of what else I can try to sort this, or is pressing that part of the turret over the only way?

    Hi Mark,

I may be changing my springs this summer, I'm sure I read this problem somewhere before. I'll do a search and see what comes up and let you know.

      Mark,

Looks like you have to keep turning the spring until it doesn't touch, perseverance is the key. Nothing mentioned about the turret.

Bruce had the same problem and turned the 'bend' if the spring until it didn't touch.

      Seems a common problem.

Let us know how you get on please?

      Jeff.

Mark. I have had two people contact me recently with spring problems, wondering if they had fitted them wrong, which they hadn't. It seems to me that whoever is currently making them is not making them correctly. The commonest problem is that they are too long, front and rear, and it seems you also have had to get some "Short" ones to get them to fit properly. If they can't get the length right, then I suspect the diameter could be wrong as well, causing your other problem. Fitting them never used to be that critical. You just bought a set and fitted them. Job done. Perhaps it is time for some concerted action to get them made properly. Any suggestions out there?
          Mike.

I have had problems with spring length too, bought from main suppliers. When I had the spring fouling the strut I found that turning the spring round to another position did make a difference.

This was a problem I had over 5 years ago, so not a new issue.

Not a problem I had with the new front springs I bought from LD parts a few years ago, FWIW.

I had sn issue with spring heights and found a lot of issues with suppliers, eventually buying from SOC after talks with Trevor at Faversham Classics.

                      See my post http://socforum.com/forum/showthread...Spring-Heights

One further possibility is if the dirt shields that cover the rear of the discs have been discarded, but the actual lug where it bolts to the strut has not been chopped off and retained as a spacer.

This will generate extra negative camber but will also move the strut inwards relative to the bodywork, not a great deal but maybe enough to tip the balance between catching and not.

Hi, been away for a few days. The dirt shields are still on. I'll Have another look at twisting the springs round a bit more again (but am getting fed up of doing that) The springs are sitting correctly in the mounts. If it doesn't work, I'll drop the car off with EJ Wards who have a tool for pressing the affected part of the turret over.
                            Thanks.
