Nearly all 3HP compressors are specified at 14.5 cfm but that is air displacement. As I understand it this is not the same as free air delivery, i.e. the volume of air the compressor can deliver on a continuous basis. My old Clarke Raider 50 is 3HP twin cylinder and I recall the free air/ continuous rating was around 8cfm.

Air tools usually specify their air consumption, this should be at least matched by the free air delivery of the compressor. Unfortunately very few of the budget compressors now quote free air delivery as the figure is a lot lower than the displacement figure.

There is a basic explaination here...

I did wonder that 14.5 was high for that size compressor and as you say Roger, air displacement is different to free air delivery.

8 cfm is still good for most jobs and will certainly be more than ok for underseal which if I remember only requires only 7cfm.

The other problem is tank size and the stored air can drain quicker than can be topped up and is very annoying to have to wait for that to happen.

                    Jeff.
