    Flywheel dowels

    Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how many dowels are supposed to be in the flywheel. Mine had one in and when fitting the new clutch I fitted the the other two missing ones! I now have vibration at 2000 - 2500 rpm when stationary. I also had the flywheel skimmed so it may be this out of balance!!!
I wish I had just refitted it as it was, oh joy.

there's another post going on at the moment about vibration, after clutch has been fitted, check the bolts you fitted to the clutch plate are not to long, and there is meant to be three dowels on the flywheel

    hope that helps dave

Thanks for the reply Dave, I have been following the other post and checked bolts etc when fitting the clutch. If you look at the rimmers catalogue it say you only need one dowel, this is what was fitted to mine so I just wanted to check. It could be that having the flywheel skimmed the have sent it out of balance so I may need to try and find another one to replace it with.

Mine had three; one in the flywheel and two loose in the bell housing, Took me ages to work out what the rattling was on heavy braking.

They all should have 3 - but current experience is showing the count can be as low as 0

I found that a good fitting drill bit worked if you ground off and used the plain part. Then I thread locked them in place. I have got a very large collection of drill bits though.

                Tony,

see my post under vibration update - sounds like you have the exact same problem I've had for 3 years or so..!

Thanks all for the info, I have refitted the new clutch with 3 dowels and just wanted to check this is as it should be. After fitting the clutch I fitted a new prop ( previous thread) and the vibration was bad!! I replaced it with the old one and it is better, I think becuse of the rubber insert. I still have the vibration so the only other thing it looks like it could be is the flywheel as I had it skimmed!! I am sure it is tight as I torqued all the blots with tread lock.

                    Hi Tony

I'm thinking blots could still be a bit long, even if torqued, as this would be a force reading.I had to reduce the bolts a mil or two when renewing my clutch and if fly wheel has been skimmed the would mean the bolts has less to screw into????

As been said the clutch bolt holes are blind, so if you have had the flywheel skimmed you effectively make the thread depth shallower, skimming should not throw the flywheel out of balance. If the bolts are bottoming out they will still toque down but not clamp the pressure plate to the flywheel, I personally would not locktite the bolts as if it gets behind the bolt in a blind thread it can hydraulic and also give the impression of being tight. I have not seen a pressure plate bolt come out unless they were not tightened up in the first place.

Thanks again for the info, I will check the bolts when I strip It down. Would the bolts cause it to vibrate at certain revs? It seems fine at all other rpm.

                            Hi Tony,

the answer is yes, it's what mine has been doing and the bolt length was part of the problem plus the missing dowels. Mine was vibrating between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm the worst.

Hi Mike, thanks for the info again. Has this now cured yours or are you having ithe flywheel balanced? I may have a go at mine next week. I have the three dowels in mine now but they weren't in before.
