Ignition coil

Good afternoon everyone.

The coil on my Mk 2 is diagnosed as faulty and I've just replaced it with a Rimmers product GCL132 - standard coil. The car still won't start.

My car has Piranha electronic ignition and the existing coil doesn't have a separate ballast resistor - from earlier threads I gather the ballast resistors on Mk2s is part of the ignition loom?

Can anyone tell me if there's any reason why the standard coil won't work with the electronic ignition please?

If your system is still using the original coil feed wire then then as you correctly say the ballast resistor is in the loom and the coil you have should work ok, (the GCL132 is a 6V ballasted coil). How did you diagnose a faulty coil, it could as easily be the electronic ignition unit or more likely the pick up in the distributor.

Thank you both for your helpful responses.
I couldn't diagnose the problem so asked a friend who is an auto electrician to have a look.
His tests showed power was getting from the electronic ignition unit but there was no HT juice from the coil. I'll ask him to have another look and the diagram from milo will be useful then.
