    Steering Column

Hi I wonder if you can help, I'm restoring my MK2 stag and wanted to strip the steering column to get it powder coated. HOW does the adjustment nut come out??. Regards Keith.

There is a pin in the clamp that needs to be driven out with a punch or small nail. Be careful with it, it needs to go back in. There is like a tary under the column that supports the looms - royal pain to fix back in place, so I used cable ties (not tight) to hold the looms in place before replacing the tray.

      Welcome to our friendly forum

Unless you are going to do a full recon, you may want to reconsider stripping the column just for painting - its not that easy to strip and reassemble. I would just clean up and spray paint without dismantling.

Hi Chris, Yes doing a complete strip down. First time so a little daunting but I have started and now cannot leave anything that isn't right as the more I looked into the worse it got so have bitten the bullet. I hope it all turns out OK. I'm sure I will be on for lots more advised from people who know. Regards Keith.

Just a tip - after recon but before reassembling, fit steering wheel, then clamp lower end, and check for any rotational play. Its surprising how many places can cause any play.

The phone numbers & email in the document are out of date sorry, cant edit them.

Oh & FWIW the clamp ring available via Tony Hart / stag suppliers is well worth a go to give a much better preload to the top column bearing.

If you go ahead with the clamp ring, there is a neat trick to getting the pre-load set whilst working on your own...just ask if you go ahead.

If you search through my posts, you will see how I measured and packed out my steering column with alloy washers between the steering wheel and top bearing to achieve no play whatsoever without placing any load on the bearing. Still great after 3 years now.
