Do you have a fire (heat) alarm in your garage?

Following seeing this picture on another forum (it was a Lotus Elise), that caught fire in a garage, and the owner did not know about it until it was too late (for the car and garage fortunately, not him) thought it wise to fit a heat alarm in mine.
Especially as the garage is under our house, so a fire would not just destroy the garage and contents, but potentially the house above with us in it!
A 10 year sealed for life heat alarm (not smoke alarm, you can't fit these in garages due to false alarms) costs only £15 from Screwfix, and takes less than a minute to fit.

So if you haven't (and most don't), order now, or just call in when passing your local screwfix tomorrow.

Its not just the car that could potentially start a fire, think about all the other stuff, such as battery powered (lithium) power tools on charge, battery trickle chargers, tenders, central heating boiler etc etc.

I have a smoke alarm in the garage that will go off if I am using the angle grinder! Think the heat alarm is a good idea, and will see if they make one to hook into my house alarm - that's the only way I'd hear it!

If you buy a ACIO heat alarm, they sell radio link bases,so can be linked to other smoke alarms around the house

Just FYI, two garage fires I know of personally (one took out the entire house, luckily no injuries) were caused by alternator faults. This is why I use a battery disconnect on mine when not in use and snug in her lair.

                Just one more possibility eliminated.

                    Good tip!

I was starting to run out of things to worry about as a Stag owner!

Would this warn os of our Stags overheating ?

Great idea, our bedrooms over the garage

When our home was built some 42 years ago I made the decision to keep the Garage/Workshop clear and a separate building from the house for this reason. It would have been nice to leave and return to the house dry and comfortable but the risk of my mechanicing and engineering had to be considered.
                          Cheers, Ian A.

Wouldn't the heat alarm need to be linked to a sprinkler / fire retarder to be able to do anything about the fire other than warn?

Spotted a small irony in the picture:- the hose pipe remained unscathed ! (looked like the only item)

Smoke detectors are not linked to a sprinkler / fire retarder so why should a heat detector need to be?

But, it wouldn't take much to make a small sprinkler system, all parts are readily available.

I nearly started up a business installing such systems in houses years ago.
