    Cheap as chips!

Success today, managed to get the Stag taxed as historic at the local post office without any bother and renewed the insurance for £89 fully comp, 3000 miles/p/y, wife and I to drive and including breakdown cover. Can't be bad. It makes the 25 MPG quite acceptable. Just hope there are no major issues next week when I get it serviced.

Hi Tony, sadley had to wait a year to get free tax as my car was made in February 1975, so although 40 in February last year, the rules say it must be 40 before January 1st to get free tax come April - but at least we get this break so cannot complain.

Glad you got your tax sorted,I didn't have the same luck. Went to local post office with heritage certificate which states my cars build date is 18th November 1975. I changed section 7 to [historic] and section 8 to say I'm the registered keeper on my log book. I was told they would send off my log book to DVLA who would send me a new one plus a refund for the tax that they wanted me to pay today

Your car should be tax free from now if it was built in 1975 my car was built on 18th November 1975 but was registered in March 1976 but it is now classed as a historic vehicle
          Cheers Mark.

Hi Mark, that is correct, your car was built in Nov 75 so it will be tax exempt now, it is not the registration date but build date that counts, mine was built in Feb 75 so missed out last year.

You will get a refund, mine was showing as built in 76 and reg in 76 but build was 75. I sent the V5 and a COPY of the heritage certificate. They changed the build date then you need to tax a the post office with V5 changed to historic. Once done you will get your refund,

I sent my v5 off two weeks ago to change the taxation class to historic and it's not come back yet.

Mine were sent 3 weeks ago, phoned them this week and they say not received blamed it on post. I think they have a massive backlog and documents are stashed in DVLA. They say it normally takes 3 -4 weeks. They wanted me to pay £25 to replace a document they'd lost. I copied all documents I sent so they said they will let me resend. So helpful of them.

As I have said before many PO clerks do not know the procedure. According to DVLA (by phone after my 2 abortive attempts at local PO's) You provide irrefutable evidence of qualification, the clerk changes class to Historic. He issues zero rate taxation receipt, he sends V5C to DVLA. Surprisingly the third clerk in my instance actually knew what to do!

Any dispute get the clerk to phone DVLA.

Al, I had the same problem. Phoned the DVLA this morning and eventually they told me to take the second part of the V5 to the post office together with the MOT as it has the chassis number on it. Fill in a form V62 but do not pay the £25 as you have sent off the V5 to the DVLA previously. I did this and they put it in the computer and got accepted and issued me with 12 months free tax. This is the way to go or else you will have to pay tax and wait for them to give a refund

                          John,
When I sent mine they only changed the manafacture year. It took about 4-5 weeks. Once returned they told me to go to the post office on the 1st April with the V5 and fill in the tax class as historic. Then the post office issued a receipt saying paid. As long as the build date is correct all you have to do is change it to historic at the post office and they send the V5 off. I didn't have to fill in a V62.

Haitch, I quoted your words of wisdom to 3 post offices and they said it was impossible, as the details are put into the computer and only if the computer accepts the details ,will it issue the Road tax, Further more the zero rated tax for 1975 cars is only applicable from 1 April 2016 and up to 31/3/16 full tax is payable. So the only way you could have obtained the zero tax is if your car was built in 1974 or earlier,

                              Hi Tony.
My V5 has the date of 1st registration as 1990!! I called DVLA months ago to sort this, they said they have the correct build date on database so no problem, but amend it as you say and take all papers to PO after 5th. PO computer says NO and I was at position 3.
PO refused to call DVLA to resolve, with the queue already going out if the door, I can understand.
MOT tester said he had to do emissions test as it was down as a 1990 car, showed him my heritage certificate and he amended records. Downside is that old MOT cancelled and I've lost the few weeks MOT I had. Hopefully getting closer.
                              John.
