    Starter solenoid - wiring

I'm refitting a Triumph engine, where once a Ford Essex unit sat. I have another bit of reverse modifying to resolve; and appreciate a comment to the following ref the wiring to the starter solenoid.

This is what I think I've got right:- I have 3 wires to the solenoid.
No1 is the very think wire coming from the battery, and attaches to the large terminal with a 'eye' terminal, fastened by a nut.

No2 is the thinnest of the wires and is white/orange. The wire has a spade or Lucar terminal and clips onto the spade male end on the solenoid.

No3 Is about 4 mm thick and is white/red. I 'think' this should have an 'eye' terminal and be attached to the same terminal as wire no1.

    Am I correct?

    many thanks
    Tim

There should be two small Lucar connections, Tim. This is from the ROM:

All wires go separately to each of the three terminals.

Of the 2 'Lucar' connectors, I think one is 1/4" and the other 3/16". The wire colours will also give a clue when looking at the wiring diagram.

        Cheers,
        Mike.

Oh dear - I sense one of those arrr moments coming toward me

          Thing is - I ain't got 2 spade terminals - only one.

The starter c/w solenoid came with the engine from a pal, so I have no reason to think there's been a cobble.

So is my solution a viable workaround, or a disaster waiting to happen
          Thanks

Pop us a pic of the starter terminal area, maybe we can help?

              Ah ha!
I think taking this photo has maybe given me the route to answer my own question - and in two ways.
1st - I took this pic thro the engine mount, so it was a bit of pot luck. But if you zoom in, I think I spy a broken terminal at 7 'o'clock. What do you think ?
2nd I've gone back to the wire diagram, and now I think that if I followed my original plan, the solenoid would be permanently engaged. Not the best idea today.
So next problem is - can I remove the solenoid. It looks like the big cable going into the starter will prevent that - Oh heck !

I think you should pull the whole starter assembly, then you can work on it more easily.

Yes you can remove the solenoid with the starter in place easily, 2 bolts and connection to the starter withdraw the body and leave the plunger in place.

You can connect the thin wire (that goes to the coil) directly to the second stud terminal, that already has the short thick wire going from the solenoid to the motor (11 o'clock in your pic).
The 4mm wire (from the ignition switch) should go to the remaining spade terminal. Best would be to check the spade does not have continuity with either of the stud terminals, and you can double check to see if the broken spade terminal does have continuity to the upper stud.
