    Confused

My Stag is a Mk1 at least that is what the chassis number indicates first registered 1972, however I am a bit confused as certain parts on the car are Mk2 i.e. the Air Filter box, badges, wheels etc. I know that alot of people have replaced the Mk1 wheels and badges for Mk2 as they prefer them, but why the air filter box?

What I really want to know is are these original parts for my car as it was a very late Mk1 or has someone messed with it,.as I for one would like it as original as possible!

    Thanks for any insight Ian

    Ian,

There was no one cut-off point when ALL Mk1 components were replaced by Mk2 at the build stage. Instead they were gradually incorporated as the stock of Mk1 bits ran down. For example, Mk1 door locks were used for quite some time on Mk2 cars.

Conversely, some Mk2 bits appeared on cars with chassis numbers starting with 10,000 (as opposed to 20,000), like I assume yours does. These cars are known unofficially as 'Mk1.5'.

One of the first changes was to the cooling and carb air input systems, and it happened in 1972. So your Mk2 airbox is probably correct, and you may well have, correctly,a Mk2 radiator, 20lb cooling system.

Badges in 1972? They should be grey and not black and alloy wheels weren't introduced until 1973 (according to James Taylor's book 'Triumph Stag, Super Profile').

    regards

    Ray

Thanks for that it clears it up a little bit knew it had to be a BL thing, the badges and wheels I was sure had been chaged by someone at some stage to better match the black body work

I have one these 1972 cars too, such that the whole car is Mk1, save for the 20psi engine, and the no side windows hood. Incidentally, if by any remote chance the original hood is still fitted, you should find a white tag on the rear edge with a date on it - which I assume is the date of hood manufacture

You may find, like mine, that even though it has the 'Mk2' cooling system, it has a Mk1 inlet manifold. Mine was built in December 1971.

I have recently changed the inlet manifold for a proper Mk2 and it seems to have improved the stability of the temperature a bit. It no longer climbs a few degrees when pulling hard at high speed. Still have to prove it on a really hot day, but it was fine on the way to Brooklands until my water pump failed
