Gearbox oil change

Hi All,

I'm feeling vey pleased with myself after changing the timing chains, refurbing all seats, dash, instruments PAS pipes etc etc. The Stag seems to run nicely, but then again I have no yardstick as a comparison.

Anyway, I'm thinking I should change the manual gearbox oil and diff oil. I have only axle stands to work with - can anyone advise best oils for both and any hints please?

Draining the gearbox is relatively Ok as it has a drain plug, not so the diff though.

Access isn't too bad but do check you can get the filler plugs out before you drain the oil!

I never find filling easy with those little bottles, but it's not too bad. After all the other jobs you've done I don't think you'll have much of a problem!

Whilst you are under the back chsanging the diff oil it's a good idea to make sure the breather is clear. It is actually a small "jiggle" pin on the top of the diff housing on thd drivers side. Worth dojng as it does get blocked then when the diff warms up pressure builds up and can force oil out of ghe seals.

Other than straight forward oil change, try to take the car a runfirsg to warm the oils. For the diff I use an EP 80. Not sure what people recomend for tha manual g/box as mine is an auto. I used to use an sae 30 oil on my vanguard with o/drive.

When you say little bottles Mike, do you mean the small ones with the long clear filler hoses integral with them? I guess that's how gearbox oil comes if so?

You mentioned filler plugs in plural Mike - are there more than one then?

tip for doing oil refill /changes on box and diff maybe , i buy hand cleaner in 5ltr tubs that come with there own dispensing pump bit like a large domestic soap pump you would see in a bathroom i wash and clean the grit type cleaner out after use and use the pump with a tube attached to outlet to fill the gearbox just done this recently luckily my cap fitted that of a 1ltr gearbox oil plastic bottle so i can reasonably accurately measure the contents going in as well .the gearbox fill plug can be a bit akward and the spanners they sell on the bay might as well be made from plastic !! when you get the plug out iether weld a nut on the end or replace with a brass taper plug fitting with a hex much easier.

I think I used EP 90 in my gear box and EP 80 in my diff, or was it the other way around?

ROM states the same for gearbox/ overdrive and rear axle for the Brish Isles:

BP Gear Oil SAE 90 EP
Castrol Hypoy
Duckhams Hypoid 90
Esso Gear Oil GX 85W/140
Mobilube HD 90
Petrofina Pontonic MP SAE 90
Texaco Multigear Lubricant EP90
Shell Spirax 90 EP

But there's also a note that "If gearbox drained completely, refill with Hypoid 75W Gear Oil"

For "Overseas"
Temp Range -10 to +20C Hypoid 90
Temp Range -30 to +10C Hypoid 80W

Same note as above for when the gearbox is completely drained, refill with 75W gear oil

Yes, I meant those little 1 litre bottles. I like the suggested alternative methods of getting the oil in there. I shall have to give them a try!

Filler plugs as you also mentioned the diff! Sadly there's no drain plug on the diff (but there is a 'flat' area on the bottom that should be suitable for drilling and tapping for one).
