    Carb leaking

    Hi,

after some weeks of rain (especially on weekends) I decided to take the Stag out for a first run. Unfortunately I got a problem. With the ignition on I waited for the fuel pump to stop ticking. But it didn't stop. A short look under the bonnet showed the left hand carb leaking into the V and on the floor (but not through the overflow pipe in front of the engine).

Last autumn I had a similar situation with the right hand carb, which I was able to cure by stopping the fuel pump until engine stopped and then giving the carb a good flush with fresh fuel (as advised here in some other threads). But the same procedure now doesn't stop the carb leaking.

Any thoughts on what could have caused the leak and how to fix it would be much appreciated. But keep in mind, that I never worked on carbs before.

    Regards

It's likely either a blocked or u/s float needle valve, a punctured (and therefore non-floating) float, float chamber gasket or main jet assembly O ring seal (through the float chamber body).

All of these require the carb being off the car to inspect and /or fix.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

      Hi Wilf,

thanks for that. I took both carbs off the car and changed the float chamber gaskets, the float needle valves and the gaskets of the choke. The floats and diaphragms were okay. Tomorrow I will put them back. Because I have not found an obvious problem I'm not sure, that the leak is cured. I'll see.

Do you think that I've to adjust the carbs after these actions?

      Regards

        Hi Gerd
I had a similar problem and changed all of the parts you have changed and also adjusted the compensators and float heights.
It is easy to fit the float chamber gasket wrongly which results in it fouling the float mechanism and causing problems.
        Guess how I know this.
        Best wishes

          HI

Might have too much pressure from pump if not a standard. Try fitting one of these, this solved my leaking carbs. Tim

            Hi again,

this morning I put back the carbs and checked for leaks. And unfortunately the left hand carb is leaking again, but now through the overflow pipe. It looks like the fuel is "climbing" through the jet until it reaches the level of the overflow pipe. Does that make sense? Do you think I should change needle and jet? And if so, what's the best (and fastest) source?

Steve, I checked the float levels and both were 16,3 mm. So that shouldn't be a problem. I'll check again the float chamber gaskets.

Tim, I have a standard pump and never had pressure problems before.

I would check needle valve again, if very thing is fitted correctly cannot see it being anything else.

Gerd - once you stop the leak, (and that must now be down to a dysfunctional needle valve?) if you have not changed the float heights, I don't see why you would need to adjust the mixture.

However, these being Strommies, it couldn't hurt to check it.

                  Hi,

the leak is fixed now. I double-checked the float height and found that it was only 13 mm. After adjusting to 16-17 mm it seems to be okay. But now the engine is idling at 1.500. That needs adjustment.

                  Thank you for your help.

                  Regards

I had the same problem, stripped the carbs, checked the floats and their operating heights as per the B/Leyland manual. Removed the needle valves and replaced them with Grose ball valves obtainable from Moss Europe. There is a small problem with the threads on the Grose ball valves which are tight in the carb housing thread. I fixed by dressing with a needle file. Work with patience and Percy Verance

I have the same problem, which Grose valves did you use. Is there a part number I can use to get the right ones from Moss-Europe?

                      Thanks in advance

Buy these from Leacy Classics. They fit without dressing with a file.

                          Thanks Dave

After I posted here I found another thread that talked something about imperial and metric threads. If the Leacy ones fit fine that those are the right ones.

Rather an unfortunate supplier's name to solve the OP's problem!
