    Replacement tyres.

Do any of you recommend a particaular tyre and model to fit to the Stag? Currently, I have 175x14 88H Nankang (Allstar I think). I have been recommended to use 195x70x14 as a straight fit to standard Stag alloys. I don't want to go any wider than that. I am mainly looking for a comfortable tyre that is safe if I get caught out in the wet but comfort is the priority. It doesn't have to be a super dooper performance handling tyre.
    Thanks. Mark

Mark. I have been using 195/70/14 tyres for some time. I have just bought a set of four Dunlop StreetResponse 2 tyres from the Black Circles website. They cost me £242.16 fitted at their local agent. I am very pleased with the price, and their performance. Check them out yourself and see what else is on offer.
    Mike.

I fitted 195/70/14 Michelin Energy to replace ancient 185/70/14 BF Goodrich. Very happy, good in the wet, except the steering doesn't feel quite as sharp as it was. Other thing is that the speedo reads under (~10% @ 30mph, but pretty much spot on at 50 and above (according to TomTom)). Comfort is fine.

You can still get the original size - 185 R14 90H - from Vredestein; it is their Sprint Classic. Very happy with mine, and keeps all the original geometry.

185hr14 was the original size on earlier cars. Later cars, around 1976/77, were fitted with 175HR14. If the original was 175HR14 then 1957014 is the correct conversion. I recently bought a set of Khumo 1957014 in the H speed rating which are fine. Going to 70 series on cars originally fitted with 185HR14 is trickier and probably needs to go to 15 inch wheels. Fitted a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics just a couple of months or so ago.
Bought them on line from Camskill and had fitted at a local garage.
Mine is a '74 manual, on original steel wheels.

Look good, and so far feel good.

On my second set of Vredestein Sprint Classics now. Always been really happy with them, performance and looks.

I got these over 2 years ago,,cheap, comfortable, never had any scary moments, and quiet so doesn't interfere with listening to that exhaust note.

                    WESTLAKE SP06 88T 175/TR14 T 88 4 £43.40 £173.60

                    VAT @ 20.0% £26.62
                    Total £159.71

                    Yes-all 4 and fitted.

I had expensive tyres fitted before, but because of the age of them ,they were perished with separating treads,The treads had plenty of depth, but you could see the cords.
So my thoughts were -I'd rather change cheap tyres more often than see expensive ones come apart because you naturally want to get more life out of them.
They did seam to pick up small stones to start with, but most new ones can do this, also my speedo does under read by about 10%.

Hmmm - seems I spoke too soon, or my posting jinxed things.

A couple of days ago I spotted a small bump in the side wall of one of the Sprint Classics on the Stag (Rear n/s, in the location of the I in Sprint).
The tyres have done circa 80 miles.

It may be nothing to worry about, but I contacted Camskill and they want me to take the tyre off the wheel, courier it to them at my expense. Then it will be assessed and a refund made, if it's not deemed user damage, based on condition. No replacement tyre offered, just a refund. These is the "Distance selling" rules.
By my reckoning it will cost me ~ two thirds of the original tyre cost to get a replacement tyre on the car - and then only if they deem it a manufacturer issue.

When I bought these tyres, I totted up the costs and went for the online purchase and pay to get fitted locally route because it was about £15 per wheel cheaper, and I was replacing all 5, than anywhere else I could find. Also not all places, when I looked, supplied this tyre.
However, since then I have found a local fitting station that could have sourced and fitted for just a couple of quid more per tyre. Then I would have had somewhere local to go back to.

                      Lesson learned.
My advice now is look harder locally for a Vredestein supply and fit, as the distance selling rules around returns/refund if you need to use them are a pain in the proverbial.

Good lesson learned and passed on. My well established local independent tyre shop will always match an online price, and then there is the benefit of a local person to talk to if something goes wrong. I've been using them for at least 20 years for all my family's cars.

                          Interesting

I could not find anyone around where I live in Bournemouth who could get them, so I ordered on-line (Oponeo, I think). A local independent tyre shop was happy to fit them for me.

For me, it doesn't matter how many miles or years the tyres last. I just need to be safe.

I did quite a lot of on line searching and struggled to find anyone locally, or at what I felt was a reasonable price, but today found a fitting station that is just 10 miles from me listed on Vredestein's website.
Vredestein's approved dealer listing is hard to find and I only did after being told it was there by Vredestein themselves (as I am now trying to get them as the manufacturer to look at the tyre locally).
As it turns out the tyre fitter listed by Vredestein as one of their approved suppliers deny that they are linked in any way, but they can get the tyres and fit them - if that makes sense. So they won't act on Vredesteins behalf to assess my tyre, but would have been a better bet in the first place for me if I had realised.
                              Hope all that makes sense!
