    Datsun Halfshafts !?!?!?!?!?

Please excuse my ignorance but i have not very long had my stag and have read on here about fitting Datsun shafts and wanted to find out more about them

1 Which Datsun do you get the shafts off of?

2 Can you still run the Standard Stag wheels as i want to keep the car looking original from the outside?

I am in the process of getting the parts together to rebuild the rear end as i have the Diff whine and wondered about the Datsun shafts

    cheers D

    1. Don't know, but good question! does anyone know if 280zx ones will fit?

    2. Yes, I believe you retain the Stag Hubs.

      G'day D,

I'm told that the Datsun model numbers vary between the UK and Australia so what may be a good model number here may not apply to you. I used shafts from a 280ZX, which also answers Kevin's question if it is the same car. I think any of the more "sporty" models have the correct shafts.

There is info if you search on this site and a heap more on the triumphstag.net forum on this mod.

You will need to get the triumph hubs and triumph diff flanges machine to accept the Datsun UJs or you can obtainthe more expensive hybrid "Tridat" UJs and save on the machining costs. (I bought the hybrid UJs).

      regards,

      Raoul

Hiya, the original Datsun driveshaft conversion was from the Datsun 180B, I think they've probably all returned to the reddust from whence they came by now. In 2005 at the ESM in Engelberg, I met two owners who's Datsun shafts had failed during fast cornering, it seems they were a fraction too long and had crushed the outer joint. E.J. Wards are doing a kit using later shafts that fit properly, they're at www.ejward.co.uk and no - I'm not on commision ! Good luck.

old subject i know but have just had a set of Hybrid Triumph (27mm) & Datsun (28mm) universal joints manufactured so don't need to machine any of the parts

I have measured the shafts and there is just 4mm difference in length (Datsun slightly longer) so there is little chance of compression damage unless under very heavy compression loads. They are a perfect fit and no modifications are necessary, also if needed you can always replace with the original sliding shaft design units if you change the car etc.

The Datsun shafts came from a 180b but most of the240Z - 260Z or even the 280Z can be used.

Will post some photographs when i get a chance also if anyone is interested in a set just PM me and i can give you the information.

                Gary

I'm pretty sure the reason for this is over packing with grease causing the end to pop out due to a hydraulic lock.

I've only seen it once on a set I've just been sorting out for someone who had had them badly built 15 years ago. On each hub and diff yokes one of the bearing cups was loose due to the hole being too large caused by reaming the whole yoke in one operation. This had eventually led to a bad vibration albeit 15 years on.

Nearly all the shafts that I have stripped that have been previously rebuilt have the top 4 plastic spacers missing. This is because it is quite difficult to get the bearings and spacers far enough in to allow the circlip to seat and can also be caused by over packing. I always rebuild with the correct number of spacers and had to have some specially made up.

                    Hi D

in the SOC magazine no 107/April 1989 pages 46,47 you find an article from John Parker, secretary of SOC New Zealand. He describes the conversion of Datsun driveshafts for the Stag incl. universal joint differences and machine modifications. This article is also in the Technical Reprints from 2000 on page 118.

I bought my Datsun drive shafts from Chris Witor in 1995. Have done 130000 km, no problem so far.

I can do the Rilsan shafts complete with GKN heavy duty ujs with larger needle roller bearings and a thrust washer under the bearing cap and new hub bearings. I only use top quality Timken or Japanese Koyo bearings and the correct British Motor Heritage collapsible spacer and Chris Witor’s modified stainless tab washer, which as well as looking nice helps preserve the end float when tightening the locking nut. The hubs are split using a repro of the Churchill Puller as a press can damage the end of the stub axle and bend the hub flange.

At the risk of being sectioned.... I can offer a limited number to forum members at £325 + p&p on an exchange basis which represents a considerable saving.
