    Jackshaft update

    Hi All,

    Just to update on teh jackshaft failure. My garage has started stripping down the engine to investigate the jackshaft and, as predicted, the water pump gear has partially disintegrated. The pump has only done about 400 miles, fitted last May. My garage got the pump through Parkers Parts. I am going to get the original pump refurbished at Wards and will be refitting that one. I am going to fit IWIS chains and replace the oversized radiator with an original 3 core type. I am still not sure about fitting an electric fan. Can an electric fan be fitted to the front of the rad at a later date without removing the rad, ie through the front grill?

    Should know a bit more tomorrow night when they have got the shaft out.

    I fitted my Kenlowe fan from the front through the grille, using the right angled bent rod kit to fix it in place. I kept the viscous fan to keep general underbonnet temps down, the leccy fan is insurance and for those times like stopping abruptly after a long motorway cruise that can lead to rapid overheating even in a well behaved Stag.

      Sounds like one of those old stock unhardened pumps that are still kicking about, that is the danger in obtaining Stag water pumps from places other than the big suppliers where this old stock should be long gone.

        Also happened to my car, but I caught the potential failure in time because there was metal swarf in the drained oil. It probably had a soft pump installed by the PO's engine rebuild. I went the belt-driven water pump route about the same time Steve had the actual failure on his car.

          Hi All,

          Further update, my mechanic cannot shift the jackshaft it is stuck fast. Has anyone got any ideas? He has fitted a slide hammer on the jackshaft thread but is concerned that too much force may cause more damage.

            I'm assuming that your mechanic has removed the distributor.
            Can the jackshaft be turned?

              Steve, jackshaft is seized in the block. Distributor, water pump both removed.

                Engine out, pull the core plug and bash it through from behind - it'll have to come out and be stripped for the inevitable bushing/machining or machining/oversize jackshaft

                  I am begining to resign myself to the possibility that the engine will have to come out. When you say stripped, what has to come of other than the anciliary items, most of which have already been removed?

                    Well it will probably have to be line bored, so it will need to be a completely bare block as there will be swarf that will get in the oil ways - this is not a job to done half-arsed.

                    It'll give you a chance to check the rest of it over and do a rebuild, then, assuming your mechanic does a decent job you can forget about it for years

                      if machining is required then it has to be fully stripped in order to guarantee it can be cleaned properly to remove all swarf debris before being professionally reassembled when i say stripped i mean a bare block ,because no engineer in their right mind would wish to machine and refit an engine that was not this way prepared or at least none worth his salt ..............

                        When my jackshaft seized it need a big hammer to drive it out from the rear, it had thoroughly welded itself in place.

                        Definitely an engine out job I am afraid. I had to have my block bored out and fitted with a bronze sleeve as although I tried honing out the damage, it left the clearance around the new shaft far too large. Since it is connected to the main oil gallery it would have seriously dropped the oil pressure if I had left it.

                          Well the jackshaft has been removed and there is damage to the front section of the shaft and the bore has been scored so the inevitable is to have the engine out and rebuilt. I have booked it in with EJ Wards but they cannot do it for at least four weeks. Does any one know where you could pick up a good quality exchange, rebuilt engine off the shelf to foreshorten the wait because I am going to miss half the summer by the time the car is returned. I did consider buying a second hand engine but you don't know the condition and you could be throwing away money that can go towards the rebuild - unless anyone has a good engine for sale?!!
