    Carb Overhaul

MOT is due next month on my 1976 and I was planning on overhauling the carbs as to quote the MOT tester it was "miles out" last year. He was convinced my Stag was a 1972 so let it pass.

Apart from the high co2 it sometimes is very slow to drop back to idle when the cars warmed up; it will quite often sit at 1,200 rpm.

I was planning on a rebuild kit from Burlen for the 3883 model carbs http://zenithcarb.co.uk/cf/vehicle/l...h&vehicle=Stag which I think includes new needles and then basically a full strip down clean and re-assemble

    Any thoughts suggestions comments please!

Hi Nick, I am interested in doing this to on my 76 model. The only thing that has put me off is the setting of the jet as it has to be pressed in and accurately. Currently, when setting up my cards, I set the needles to being level on the bottom of the damper and the turn one and half full turns with the mixture adjusting tool to get the car running. Then presuming that the needles are set the same, I can balance the carbs. Problem is, I cant actually measure of the jets are at the same height, so my starting point could be out so they are not balance from the start. Hope this makes sense.

Fast tick-over and high emissions? Double check that the choke is fully closing, Nick.

Mine sticks resulting in exactly the same symptoms; I have to manually close it on the carb.

      It's on my todoodoo list.

Ditto - just on one bank. First time it happened it scared the s41t out of me.

Not as scary as throttle linkage getting caught up on the vacuum advance pipe, when on wide open throttle after a blast up the sub carriageway, and then try for to slow down for the roundabout with revs still at 4500!!

Interesting in the interests of being prepared for anything. Had something similar happen to me back in the 70's on company Austin Maxi ! Frightening but just turned off ignition, actually got car home for over 50 miles with ignition on off low gears etc. and mostly rolling bump starts . Hoewver on Stag one would I assume have to be very careful not to lock steering and if an auto be reliant on key starts only?

Nice one! I'll check the chokes full return; I hadn't thought of that .

Regarding tick over check the throttle linkage isn't resting on carb breather hose slightly causing it not to return fully.

For me it is to do with the choke. You can see the cable is slack, but the fast idle doesn't return.

On a slightly separate topic I've just bought an ultrasonic cleaner. What do most folk use as chemical for cleaning carbs there seems to be the options of home made formulas or buy the ready made solutions from fleaBay?

Have you tried a blast of carburettor cleaner?
