I have often wondered weather they recon the solenoids as well. Personally I would rather do it myself then you know what's gone into it.

I'm just about to fit a hi torque starter to an XK120 - partly because the inertia starter pinion has split and can't find a spare part, the end of the shaft is damaged by the PO so even if I could get a spare I couldn't change it.

A recon inertia starter is the same money as a hi torque from Holden, so it's a no brainer

Replacing the solenoid cured it for me!

Sorry to bring this one up again, but I thought I'd start to look at this today.
Rather than get underneath the car I thought I would look at my spare s/h (condition unknown but bought as OK) starter.

I took the solenoid off - the plunger came with it unfortunately (what a pain that was to get back on over the arm!).

I undid the two main contact posts nuts and the two screws in the end cap (mine is cracked - can you get replacement caps?)

I still couldn't get the end cap off. There are two soldered connections - do I need to unsolder these, or am I going about this the wrong way?

          Thanks for advice as ever.

Russ its time for you to do the solenoid write up, Yes you do need to unsolder these connections. I doubt you will get a replacement cap.
