    Wannabe stag owner!

First post here - apologies if not got it right yet!

I'm interested in buying a stag, not too concerned re age / colour etc,
although do like green ones (brook lands or BRG). I have £7k -£8k available
and am realistic about what this will buy. I do need a hardtop.

Any thoughts on the best place for me to try rather than eBay etc?

    Thanks all

    Kevin P

Faversham classics had a green one for sale - just looked but its sold now

If i was you i would look on all the classic car for sale sites and auto trader etc - try not to be to specific on the colour of the car and go for the best one you can get condition wise for the money.
I know the colour / trim can make or break the look of the car but condition is more important and cost effective in the long run

I've had 9 stags in total all in different states of condition and have always wanted a White automatic with Black trim but I've never managed to get one and have a Sapphire Blue Manual o/d one now

Welcome to the SOC and forums. £7-8k is a reasonably good budget, so what you need to be careful of is differentiating the smart looking car that is just starting to have a few "blisters" appearing which will mean it as rotten as a pear really and the slightly scruffy but really solid car. Quite a lot of Stags for sale usually, and there are some in the Club magazine (which I don't have to refer too) but someone here may be able to check and post details on.

There is one for sale on the SOC main page (not sure if you can see the For Sale ads) that is Brooklands Green and £6k. Here are the details'

For Sale 1972 STAG Manual Tax Exempt
Original 3 litre V8 Triumph Engine,
Have owned this Stag for over 35 years, comes with soft top and hard top.
Has Leather seats with burr dash. Is in Brooklands metallic Green.
Is Taxed and MOT so ready to go.
Will come with lots and lots of spares, Diff, Gear box, Wing, Heads, etc to many to put down.
£6000.00 o.n.o without collectable plate. £10000.00 with plate
My car has collectable number plate as you can see. This can be brought with the car or I will Re-Register it

Thanks for the advice all. I did make contact with the seller on the SOC site who sold it 1 month
ago to whom he thought was a regular enthusiast, but turned out to be a trader moving it on....
The seller was not happy- quite rightly. I think the comments about condition are useful - so many
shiny ones out there, but I'd rather have an honest stage with a few scrapes than a freshly resprayed one.

I'll keep going searching - next question: Magenta - is it a 'marmite' colour?

            Hi Kevin,

I can only echo what others have said. I wanted a white, 1972 manual overdrive. I bought a stunning 1974 red auto. Why? Because it was the best car I could afford. While the colour is growing on my, it isn't an original triumph colour. The car was originally magenta. I am seriously considering returning it to the original colour. It is kind of a marmite colour, but it suits the era.

I think red looks great with the stripes and alloys and a nice black hood.

                Hi Kevin.
Welcome to the forum, there is a trader who has form for that.

Hope you can come to our West Sussex monthly meetings at Bolney Stage 8.00 on 1st Tuesday of the month, often members cars are sold before advertising. I am down the road in Lewes if you need any help.
                John.

I was offered a red MOD Stag last week - 1975, didn't go and look, but could make further enquiries. Owner is losing his feet (surgically) so won't be able to drive.

Jeez - that's sad, really, really sad.

Yeah - he apparently had a servo fitted to the clutch, now removed, to keep driving as long as possible.

Personally, I don't think I could give mine up - in the history of my Stag there is a receipt for conversion of my car to hand controls, so owner 2 felt the same

Thanks All. John, I appreciate the info about the members meet in Bolney - I may even have one before the June meet (keen, I know!) - am going to look at two this coming week. One is very early, one is late. I guess it's a perennial question, and I have heard different views about whether mark 1 or Mark 2 is better. did I read somewhere that the steel on the early ones are made of higher grade / thicker steel?

Oh, and one more thing - would I be shot at dawn and banished into the long grass if I even considered one with a rover 3.5 engine......? just asking

There are a couple of members who think a Stag isn't a real Stag if it has anything other than a Stag engine, or Stag gearbox or Stag suspension but, as the SOC has Modified Stag Officer, we let them post if they behave

Seriously, that sort of thing is no problem here.

Hi Kevin, I guess that you do not have access to PM's or a mag as you are a trial member. I am your local co-ordinator and live in Brighton, give me a call on 07802246236. Next meeting at Bolney Stage is June 7. But we have events at Brands Hatch and Bromley Pageant before then that you could join in with if you become a member.
