This maybe a little long. I need to pick the collective brains.
Firstly while having an MOT last week, a comment was made that the front brakes were binding a bit. Not so much I "should worry about it" Brakes passed, no advisory for the bind. Car has been running fine lately, maybe the best it has been in a long time. Car has the Stagwebber header tank fitted. I checked the fluids before leaving for Berkshire, all good.
Four miles approx down the road from the front door, there was a loss of power, followed by a chugging, engine running rough (thought had lost a couple of cylinders) temp gauge doing an impersonation of a Red Arrow in a climb, (thought head gasket). Stopped in a lay by open the bonnet, loads of heat, water coming out of the header tank overflow, also out of the tank filler neck (thought rad cap failure). Phoned recovery. (I say I sat for a little while between prodding and poking, but was there for 90mins till recovery arrived)
After a while tried the engine, started straight away, ticked over nicely. Again the Red Arrow impression from the temp gauge. Revved it a bit seemingly working fine, switched off before I lost sight of the
Red Arrow in the Red. After a while checked the dipstick, the one in the engine not the one stood scratching its head. No sign of emulsion or water contamination. Took the rad cap off slowly, no hiss, no water shooting
out. (Dint think too much about it, other than that lost pressure quickly). Tried starting it again, ticked over nicely, remembered to look at the oil pressure, normal for tickover, increased to normal for higher revs. Before the Red took off again knocked it into drive went down the length of the lay by put foot on brake, pedal went to the floor. Tried reversing back to start point, a lot slower than went forwards !! again brake pedal went to the floor. Brake reservoir fluid level not gone down. Gave up and sat twiddling thumbs.
So . . . . . if rad cap was faulty and not pressurising, may have caused water to boil ?????
Engine ticksover easily and freely revs soon after, no head gasket problems ??
Binding brakes boiled off the fluid allowing pedal to go to the floor ???
MOT man was wrong and binding brakes were a problem and caused everything else, excess power needed, therefore overheating etc etc ???
Anyone wanna buy a car !!
