Diff seals and bearings

My diff is leaking oil from the front seal.
The breather is clear.
When I drop the diff assembly I plan to replace the seal and bearing in the diff extension and the seal on the front of the diff.
Advice on previous threads is to replace the bearing in the diff nose as oil will have flushed the grease from the original bearing.
My diff is a later type with a collapsible spacer washer. Can this washer be replaced? Should it be replaced?
Having read the ROM and Haynes manual I admit to being still confused.
Any advice would be most welcome.

you said the oil is leaking from the front of your diff,once you have taken the front diff extension off, to replace the bearing inside,you should be able to get to the oil seal at the front of the diff,you don't need to touch the collapsible spacer

There is only a bearing in the diff extension, circled in picture

The Diff seal can be replaced without disturbing the collapsable spacer as the seal can be prised out and replaced quite easily.

There is a excellent modification which I carried out this mod courtesy of Klaus Shuleur which involves drilling a drain thole to prevent any oil that does leak should not wash any lubrication away, it can be found at http://socforum.com/forum/showthread.php?27832-Diff-extension-bearing-a-modification&highlight=diff+drain

If you are going that deep into it, might be worth fitting a reinforced diff extension housing f you don't already have one.
