    Tremors

    Hi all,

I've a slight tremor coming through the steering wheel and very very slightly through the seat, at nearly 40mph, worse when car has been driven for a few miles. Its not the wheelstyres, swopped out Minators for a original wheels, same problem, in fact was slightly worse ( heavier wheels? )

Heres whats been replaced in the last 1000 miles, with newor reconditioned parts. With every change there has been an improvement, vibration has almost gone but having spent so much money and timeon the problem I'm determined to cure it completely.

    Propshaft (new)

Front wheel bearings, front disks, calipers and pads

Both Rear drive shafts including hubs

    Gearbox mountings

Diff mountings ( swopped poly for rubber ).

    Both outer subframe bushes.

Any ideas? A steering component? Steering does seem very vague around the centre, and I do have a slight steering rack leak.

    Thanks

    Steve

    Steve,

Check the steering ball joints (GSJ130). These dry up and will give a wobble to the steering, particularly when cornering.

Although you say its not wheels/tyres, are you sure? I had this problem not on a Stag, but a Saab. Although the wheels had been balanced, it transpired that at least one of the tyres was out of round, which was then felt as a tremor at certain speeds.

          Hi,

No I dont think its the wheels or tyres as I put a different set on and experienced the same problem.

          Regards

When you say you replaced wheels with another set can we assume this referred to all four wheels. Rear wheels also need to be balanced, although 40 is a low figure for rear wheel balance problems.

Just had my rear wheels done. Not very noticeable accelerating, bit of a tremor around 55, but the car was bouncing all over the place on the way down.Best bit is that the handling and ride at lower speeds have also been greatly improved.Cost me £5.00.

Since you say the steering is a bit vague, I wonder if you have checked the ball joints under the steering rack gaiters. Apart from the condition of the joints themselves, each is attached the end of the rack, then locked in place with a tab washer.

Some while ago I was given a Stag rack which had caused an MOT fail. There was little wrong with it apart from these joints being loose, perhaps from a poor rebuild.

You might also check the rack pinion end float for excess play, at the same time.

There has been some previous discussion about this problem 'steering rack , wobble' thread.

Still haven't had time to look at mine!

does the wobble get worse when braking?
