Neil, there should be a lock nut o the plunger to stop it unscrewing. Often the spring is too short and can rattle around - you can stretch it to make it longer. Adjust length of plunger until either hood cover is just tight enough, or until the seal touches down all round on the tonneau cover.
    Cheers!

Apologies to all grannies who know all about egg-sucking.

The lower (adjusting) nut needs to be backed up (anti-clockwise) tight against the locknut (clockwise) in order to "lock" the two nuts securely.

Just tightening the locknut down against the adjusting nut won't lock either of 'em.

Neil. The plunger on my hood frame measures just over 6.5cm from the mounting bracket to the other end. More importantly is the measurement to the locking face, where the spring loaded washer sits. This is 5.5 cm.

Neil, I have found that the new ones are not as good quality as the old (well I never!). The nut on the new ones is a clinch nut, ie is not brazed like the originals, and the clinch can come loose, and the plunger drops out. If you can get a good used one or weld your own, that might be more reliable.
