    The tab is connected (I drilled the hole slightly so that it fits over one of the speedo clamps and thus make an earth for the device).

      For what it's worth, I've just been doing some testing on the workshop bench. I've found the resistances that make most sense, with a 10 volt stabilised supply attached are; Empty 220 Ohms, 1/4 120 Ohms, 1/2 68 Ohms, 3/4 42 Ohms and Full 22 Ohms. I also found my resistance wire in the sender unit had slipped down from where it should be, so was causing my massive under-reading error. I guess the resistance is non-linear due to the heating requirement of the bi-metal element in the gauge, whereby current would need to square to maintain linear heating?
      Just a thought.
