    Straight six Stag

Just wondered if any forum members had a Stag with the 2500 engine?

I know the Stag purists will scoff at such an idea  but I just wanted an unbiased view from someone who actually owns or drives one.

    Thanks!

under powered and not enough torque especially in an auto no fuel savings and de values the car. apparently.

When i bought mine last year it hadthe 2500 engine fitted, but i changed back to TV8 power this spring, only for originality through, plus more powerOH and the lovely exhaust note.

        Hi Cheesy

I owned a straight six engined stag for about 3 years before my current car,

The engine note was quite good and the performance was not far off the v8 stag which I now have, although perhaps not so much low down torque,it had twin su's, the main reason I changed was because I was never happy with the amateur body restoration, although there was no rot. also it was Magenta.(sorry magenta lovers)

I have to say i would never go back to a straight six after having the triumph v8 which I think is the main thing that definines the character of the car.

I had 72 Stag with a 77 2500S engine and overdrive box.. and very nice it was too. It's a lovely smooth engine, which IIRC is only about 25hp down on the v8; I never noticed the difference. It does look a bit lost in that engine bay though.. but I think that about the "normal" 2500 saloons as well

Why do you ask? Do you have one or are you thinking of buying one?

V Mad, if you refer to my other thread:

you'll see I've been having a few problems!

I was thinking about the straight six being a bit more reliable.

I've started stripping mine down and I'm planning to try and get the heads off after work on Friday

[/quote]After work ,you sound so casual about it . I would put aside a complete weekend at least, and get a helper there for some moral support.

If you have access, read all the bumf about it (technical reprints)before you go ahead, there are lots of tips of how to do it.

Too early to think of replacement engines; you never know you may be lucky with yours.

Not a bad choice as long as you go for the UK CP series engine, but has to be PI mated to a manual gearbox. In this configuration it's marginally more powerful than the TV8. The 6 pot can be silky smooth, makes a great noise (wail rather than burble) and compared to the fragile TV8 is fairly bomb proof and reliable if looked after properly and fitted with Bosch pump. Don't bother with anything intended for the US market or fitted with carbs which won't be powerful enough.

                      Sorry lads,

The TV8 is areliable and a sweet sounding engine if looked after properly.

Yeh, but the legion of owners who are not members of the flat earth society, but felt the desperate need to swap their TV8 engines for Rover, Ford and other Triumph units might disagree.

As they say 'love is blind' but just because some folks keeping saying that all the problems are now sorted and it's reliable, doesn't make it right. An engine that's famous for overheating resulting in warped heads, timing chain problems, self destructing jack shafts and weak crankshaft bearings, not to mention the odd water pump problem, can't by any standards be considered anything less than fragile. My Stag has still got it's TV8 and always will in my ownership, but let's not kid ourselves!

I am running a straight six PI in my Stag (which is for sale BTW)

The PI it equivalent to a triple carb set up.

It pulls like a train and sounds like a TR6. After all it is the same engine as fitted to a 6 !

It is a simple and easy engine to work on with plenty of room to access all the parts.

And it is a Triumph engine !
