Starter solenoid tesing

Please can someone confirm i'm on the right lines.

I want to test a solenoid off a spare starter before I swap it over. I can't face taking the starter off.

On my spare starter motor.
If I connect the top large spade connector to the + on a battery
Body of starter to earth
Then on the solenoid, either bridge the large spade connector to the medium spade connector or run a separate wire from the medium sized spade to touch the + on battery.

What is the small spade connector for??

I should hear a click

I assume that the solenoid is still on the starter. make Shure the starter is firmly held in a vice connect the 5/16 eye connected to + and the body of the starter is connected to - and then bridge the large spade to + terminal. Just clicking does not mean that the solenoid is working ok it need to spin the starter up as well.

It takes 12v to the coil I think, someone else will confirm this or otherwise.

Latest is - solenoid dead, took it apart, cleaned the contacts, sorted . Motor a bit rough, but only need the solenoid.

Jacked up car, wheel off to get at starter, different solenoid.
For some reason I have fitted, what Rimmers describe as a very early starter. Not best pleased .
