Fuel starvation -firdt observation - do you agre or...

Apologies to all -tried to edit title and text but could not get back in last night.
I had my first on the road problem with the Stag yesterday. Since we owned it it has run impeccably except for 2 brief 5 second hesitations over 6 months ago.

Took the car to an event about 20 miles away and ran ok on way there but after a mile or so on the way back the car lost power. The throttle was virtually unresponsive. Pulled into lay by and opened bonnet but nothing obvious . Checked leads etc and fuel filter was full. Set off again and for first 1/4 mile car ran ok ! But then returned to loss of power. Really struggled to get up any even shallow incline. However I noticed that if I lifted off the throttle on a descent on overrun the car then ran ok for a hundred yards or so . I limped home and left car for 10 mins . Further underbonnet investigation and checks of leads again revealed nothing obvious. Started car - ran ok . Drove round local roads and all ok for about a mile or so but then power loss returned.

My initial thoughts are that not enough fuel is getting through to replenish float chambers. So stopping and restarting or lift off on overrun gives chance for some fuel to get into float chamber and car runs OK for a while before being starved.

Hope to be able to investigate further later today by checking flow to carbs etc.

Do you agree that symptoms are indicative of fuel starvation? Otherwise I assume ignition system is suspect (Lumenition)

    Apologies again

After trying several Google translation options, I am firmly in the ... camp.

I seem to remember you have a new LD electronic pump and a regulator. So first move would be bypass the regulator and strip and clean the inertia switch.

              Ian.

Sounds very like fuel issues to me, so I would check pump, filter, look for any blocked fuel lines, also check out the voltage getting to fuel pump as any resistance in wiring will drop the voltage, This happened to my pump which lead to same problems as you are having.

Had the same problem with mine and traced it to a dirty connector on the pump. Once cleaned and wire refitted no problems.
                  Rob.

P.s mine is the original pump with points.

Agree with Ian completely - although I would do the inertia switch first as it's less effort and no fuel spilt

                      Yes thanks Ian.

Hope to check regulator by bypass later today. I immediately suspected that and when I got home I tried increasing setting to 3.5 but didn't seem to make any difference . Was not aware that inertia switch was a serviceable item. Will read up in ROM and Haynes.

                      Thanks again
