    Vac advance removal - GRRRR

    Hi All

The vac advance is knackered on our Stag so I have purchased a replacement. I have removed the dizzy and the two screws securing the vac unit to the dizzy outer casing have come out okay. However, the slotted screw which secures the control rod to the baseplate will not budge. Penetrating oil over the past few weeks has had no effect. Someone has had a go at it in the past as the slot in the screw head is looking a bit worn!

Any suggestions on how to remove the screw? I am loath to drill it out as I don't want metal particles dropping into the dizzy internals.

    Regards

    Bruce

What about a sharp controlled tap down wards to give a little shock, remove your chopper first, or maybe a tap in a anti clockwise direction?

      Hi Bruce,

You probably have, but trying to tighten it can sometimes free stuck screws and bolts, alternatively tapping the edge of the screw anticlockwise with a small drift/screwdriver.

        Hi

I tried the impact approach earlier on today but the upper half of the baseplate simply bounces off the lower baseplate and negates the effect of the impact

        Regards

Never tried it , but what about a little bit of heat from a hot air gun?, I am sure an expert will be along soon

Bruce. I have not done it lately, but I seem to remember that it is possible to disconnect the vacuum advance rod from the baseplates another way. If you unscrew the bottom baseplate from the body of the distributor, and lift the plates up together till they are clear of it, it should be possible to rotate the lower plate until the lugs on it align with the gaps on the other so they can be separated. Then you can detatch the vacuum unit operating arm from the seized screw without having to remove it. As your unit is broken, it won't matter if the arm gets bent a bit. Once the plates are separated, you can concentrate on removing the screw on your workbench.
            Mike.

                Hi Chaps

Success Lingen was correct about gaining access to the vac unit tailarm by removing the two baseplates. To make things even better I didn't need to remove the seized screw at all as it simple acts as a drive peg for the vac unit. After giving everything a good clean I was able to reassemble the dizzy and fit the new vac unit whilst leaving the screw in position.

Whilst it was all in bits I discovered that the centrifugal weights were seized up. After about ten minutes work I managed to free them off and then give them a good oil.

The downside is that a lug got snapped off the Luminition Chopper accidentally by a friend who called by to see how I was getting on. Any suggestions on where to obtain a replacement? Paddocks are currently out of stock and Rimmers do not list them separately. Ebay lists one but it is in Australia!

                Cheers

                        Hi Chaps

Thanks for the source and also offers of assistance. Fast and generous support from the Forum as per usual I will order one from Holdens as per Keith's link. Neil and Jonno, thanks for the offers of your spares.

                        Best wishes
