ZF auto gearbox car convert to manual?

When I bought my Stag I was adamant that I wanted a manual o/d car. The one I bought has had a documented full body rebuild, so even though it has a ZF 4-speed automatic gearbox, I thought it would be okay.
Now that I've remembered how much I prefer a manual gearbox I'm thinking that I might convert it to manual but I can't remember everything that's involved.
Would I be able to do the job without taking the engine out of the car?

    Any advice would be welcome.

you should be able to do the mod with engine still in place, parts your need

    Engine adaptor plate
    Flywheel plus bush
    Gearbox and overdrive
    Gearbox mounting plate
    Pedal box
    Full clutch and bearing
    Propshaft

That should keep you busy for a while

Plus master, slave and pipe, manual console wood and gaiter

At least the exhaust will work as you are going auto to manual.

Get the bits, drive it up and I'll change it over if I get to keep the ZF

If you decide to do so, can you let Russ do it, he could then transplant into my car whilst yours is there!

Having driven a manual before buying an auto, prefer the auto even though its a BW! Saving up for another box...

Sorry guys, much as I would like Russ to do the job, I'll need to sell the ZF conversion to finance the manual and the deal he's offered doesn't cut the mustard!

I would imagine that you will get a lot of interest in your ZF conversion, Is it going on eBay?

eBay is not my favourite since by the time I've paid their fees and the PayPal fees I'll lose 20% of the selling price. Much better to offer it here at a reasonable price and both buyer and seller get the best deal.

The ZF was in the car when I bought it and it's a perfectly good automatic gearbox, much better than a BW35 or a BW65, both of which I've had in Triumph 2.5PI or 2500 'S' cars. It was fitted by Clive Tait. The selling price I will need will basically be the cost of a recon manual plus J type overdrive, new propshaft, clutch parts and all the other twiddly bits including that massively solid sound deadening panel that fits beweeen the gearbox and the tunnel.

Add in a couple of days rental of the local garage space at £70 per day.....

i think your going to have a hard time finding the sound pad for the gearbox, only early ones had it

Having driven over 60,000 miles in a MOD Stag, over 20,000 miles in a BW35 Stag and 8,000 miles since converting it to ZF, I too think you are mad but each to their own and I'm sure you will have no problem selling on the ZF kit.
