Petrol fumes in the boot of the STAG -

My problem is a distinct smell of petrol in the boot of my Mk 2 STAG. In fact I would go as far as to say that it stinks.
I have done all the things you would normally do like replacingall the venting and filler hoses even the small stubble originally meant for the USA. I have also blocked off the overflow from the filler.
I have checked the fuel pump and the petrol pipe connecter in the boot approx in the centre of the front of the tank. They are dry.
Nothing has helped. The smell is there whether I drive the car or not. What do you advise? My wife refuses to put anything in the boot and I don't blame her.
Ditto. It'll be pinholes in the bottom of the tank, caused by condensation. All four Stags I've had have suffered from this. Normally they "go" at the front edge of the tank.
Fortunately, none of mine were far gone enough to require anything other than a good flush + seal.
When I restored mine I took the tank out and used a wire brush to clean off the rust from the underside. So many holes appeared that I had to fit a new tank (which leaked from the seams, another story).
There shouldn't be any smell of petrol at all in the boot so I'd agree with everyone else that you need to remove and inspect the tank.
Having just been there and got the T-shirt i find myself with a new unused perfect Rimmer brothers fuel tank which i was going to put on ebay tommorow.When i had tank trouble i put out feelers to stagbrakersand had no luck so got one from the Rimmers auto jumble section ,then i got offered a very good original one so bought that as well,and decided to use the original as it meant no fettleing to the boot boards as the pattern tanks are about 6mm deeper .Not the end of the world but i had a choice so i went with the original.
So this tank owes me £95 (it's not the one in the photo),if you are interested andwould like some photo's ,i could probably get a camera phone inside as well.
If you stick with the old tank"Por 15" seems to be a good sealer but at £50 for the kit from Frost you would probably be better of with a new tank.I used it on the original tank i have just fitted as a belt and braces approach,but it is quite long winded and messy .
If you need to de-rust the inside of your tank and you have the use of a mixer you could throw some clean dry pea shingle in it and do this.:PCame up a treat as if it had been sand blasted
I took mine out and fibreglassed the tank below the seam line as I did with a Sprint years ago - really helped with my petrol smell (just smelt resin for a few weeks)
Thanks for your reply. I won't take you up on your offer for the tank because I have other jobs to do and will probably tackle the "smelly" STAGissue early next year.
If it turns out in the end that I'll need a new tank and yours is still available I'll come back to you. Like you I don't think I'll bother with sealers.
i found a split in the rubber filler pipe on my stag, i replaced that, still i had a strong fuel smell. I also found a small leak on the fibre washers on the pump banjo bolts.
These have been replaced, i think the smell is going. Although i think the carpets hold the smell for a while.
My tank and all other pipes are fine, i guess i will have to wait for a sunny day to give the boot an airing to see if i have cured the issue once and for all.
I think I have now solved the problem of petrol smells in the boot of my STAG. I took the fuel tank out although it was perfect on the surface. Then I realised that the bottom at some time in the past must have been leaking and it was "repaired" with Fibreglass. The petrol attacked the resin of the repair. Soon afterwards it must have started to leak again and of course it never stopped smelling. A metal repair panel was soldered in by a specialist and I have now re-installed the tank and filled it with petrol.
I had not suspected the tank as it is immaculate on top...
