    Bonnet popping open

Out for a short drive at the weekend and the bonnet started to pop open when going over the occasional bump in the road.

The bonnet does seem to wobble at the sides so packing up the side rubber stops may help, but maybe the catch has worn as well, and looking around I see that there don't appear to be any new ones available for the Stag.

Has anyone experience of this and can offer advice please.

Have you checked the operation of the bonnet release itself and the cable adjustment? If it was working fine before, I'd suspect the cable adjustment and general lubrication before swapping. I understand the release mech itself is case-hardened, so I'd expect a long life.

Hi Seadog, If the bonnet is popping it isn't latching properly. The conical head isn't going far enough down for the retaining blade to go behind it and latch. Adjustment is made by slackening the locknut on the bonnet and screwing the stem out slightly and retighten the lock nut.

Strangely, mine tried that last year after I'd replaced the strut tops. The new ones had longer bolts that stopped the sides of the bonnet going fully down. I now have two indents in the strengthening rails each side.....

The bonnet 'seems' to be latching properly stag8manod, after closing it can be pushed down against the spring about 3-4mm in the centre at the catch, the spring obviously in compression and holding the catch against the latch lever (or whatever you call it)and it seems solid enough.
My thinking was that if the catch (I mean the bit that is bolted to the bonnet) was worn then if the bonnet moves sideways or twists a bit because the side rubber stops don't actually touch the bonnet when it is closed, it could pop open, similar to mole42's problem. Might try and pack up the rubber stops a bit to stop the bonnet twisting

I think that you maybe need to adjust the catch (on the bonnet) to pull it down a bit further against the seal and stops.

              Cheers,
              Mike.

                HI
I think you will find that the part that latches to the lock is worn on the part that hits the lock, just turn the latch 180 and it should be ok.

Thanks Mike and Tim I will take the catch off the bonnet and have a look for wear and also see if I can adjust it a bit.
