Anyone else with a 3.9ltr Rover V8 in their Stag?

    Hi all.

I've just inherited my fathers 1973 Stag. It was a car he loved, and he wanted me take it on to continue it's journey. He used the car as his day to day transport, and wanted a more (in his words) reliable engine - hence the Rover V8.

Unfortunately, he died rather suddenly, and there were far too many practical questions left un-answered. I do have all his receipts, and a very grubby haynes manual :-), but i'm assuming that doesn't help with the engine. It's been a long time since i got my hands this dirty (20 years ago to be precise on an MG midget) and i could do with a reference for the engine. My question is this, is there a 'go to' reference (ie Haynes manual) for the Rover 3.9ltr? I believe it is a serpentine engine, and was maybe out of a range rover?

    thanks in advance

Get a Haynes that covers any of the cars fitted with Rover V8 i.e. Rover SD 2 injection Rover MGB, V8 Range Rover I suspect it may be fuel injected so make sure the one you buy covers fuel injection

          Hi Mark

I'd like to add my condolences to Jason's - and the welcome too.

Jakesmig has a 3.9 in his car, you could try pm'ing him if you have any particular problems or just want advice. However there are lots of very knowledgeable people on here who will help you out.

          Richard

There's loads of info on the engine, one of the greatest engines ever made, on the net.

Most of the British car makers in the 80's had at least one car in their collection with this lump in.

              Hi Mark
sorry to hear about your father
the RV8 is a superb old engine and lasted many years in various shapes and forms. I have a fair bit of info as i have a 4.5 300hp version in a TVR. TVR modified the engine for greater power output but the basics are very much the same pm me your email address and i will see what i can send over.
I can also let you have some websites that are useful for info etc. Its a very tuneable engine and fairly easy to work on.
              regards
              Glyn

Not from what I remember. Ford, Rootes, Vauxhall, Jaguar to name a few didn't ? Not saying its not a good engine but it was only BL that really used it in large numbers. TVR did but were only a small company

LDV = Leyland Sherpa = BL

I believe it was also in some Police force Sherpa's

We had a fire appliance with an old PB5 in it, revved like f**k, never let us down.

Yep knew that too Ian but if we were to be really pedantic we should say Leyland Daf as was after the BL demise in 1986, but agree one of the same - a BL Sherpa derivative

And If I recall correctly Ray, owned by Volvo Truck and Bus at the time and then tied up with Daf later on?. I used to have to go up to the big Volvo site in Warwick on various training courses back then and as well as having all the Volvo stuff hanging on the walls there was also a lot of Leyland stuff as well. Happy days,

Volvo Truck and Bus ? I must have missed that, as far as I knew they never were.

It was a long time ago Mickey, but I'm almost certain there was some connection at the time (Leyland & Volvo) As I said they had the Leyland Script up on the walls.
