    zf autobox conversion

    Hi everyone

newbie, after 18 years since last a member of the club

    Hope you are all well

Triumph stag royal blue , black leather interior, knock on chrome spokes
modifications : weber 38, tom cat seats, external water pump, header tank, vented front brake discs with jag calipers, solid discs with sierra calipers on rear,
datsun rear shafts, 1" lowered springs all round, electronic ignition.

Please forgive me and stay with me on this topic zf conversion

Currently have 4 speed with overdrive but considering zf conversion as the clutch is so problematic , hydraulics and clearances .

I have read the threads on this and would greatly appreciate any help, information, or data including photos of this conversion

    my questions are

which gearbox is best to use LDV V8, JAG, BMW regarding the easiest and cost effective transplant, I can get hold of a LDV V8 BOX but have to travel to the other end of the country.

can anyone supply a full list of what I need, remember mine is manual, not afraid to do the work myself but would appropriate photos as many as possible as they say a photo says a thousand words, especially the adapter plate for the bell housing.

Anyone done this conversion living in Newcastle upon Tyne

Again any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    thanking you all in anticipation

    kev

    Hello Kev.
Welcome to the forum. I think the LDV box has speedo drive built into tail casting. They are as rare as rocking horse poo and I'm sure I read a long time ago, a great basis, as you either have to cast a new housing as T & L do, or fit an electronic speedo drive.

a.p.p.s. ldv is the one as it has a mechanical speedo drive.

a.p.p.s. They have become very scarce.

Doing the conversion is quite a faff.

The torque convertor has to be modified with bosses welded to fit the stag driveplate.

A propshaft needs to be adapted for length & pcd.

A bracket to the x menber

A linkage to the selector (swap over to left side)

      A dipstick tube

      A kickdown cable & linkage.

Strip & rebuild of the donor box.

convertor housing adaption / fabrication / remake.

The T&L kit is good value.

oh & have a look here too:-

'DJT' s comments having done a diy conversion are valuable

thanks for the info, have read the threads and it does sound a lot of work to do, but during the winter months keeps me out the house and in the garage, wife , 2 kids and a dog don't mind doing this myself to keep the cost down and keep me busy.

will down load the threads and have a good read, anyone else with any info especially photos would be greatly appreciated

        thanks

The torque convertor has to be modified with bosses welded to fit the stag driveplate. Or the drive plate drilled to match the bosses on the ZF TC.

A propshaft needs to be adapted for length & PCD. A BW 65 propshaft will fit, but these are getting rarer.

A bracket to the x member. Not straightforward for LDV or XJ40 boxes. Easier for BMW box, but no mechanical speedo.

A linkage to the selector (swap over to left side). Stag selector can be modified, but requires welding and accurate measurements. New selector rod needed.

A dipstick tube ZF one can be modified to mimic BW one in engine bay.

A kickdown cable & linkage. ZF cable needs modifying and bracket making.

Strip & rebuild of the donor box. Or take a chance. ZF boxes are long lasting.

convertor housing adaption / fabrication / remake. Mods to BW bellhousing, ZF pump housing plus adapter plate.

The T&L kit is good value. Agreed. All new bespoke bellhousing, reconditioned box and TC, propshaft, X-member mounting, kick down cable, selector, speedo drive, etc. Plus guarantee.

i think you will find that the LDV box with the speedo drive has a larger tail section than the BMW or JAG boxes. I have only ever used the JAG box myself and have found that you can fit a speedo drive into the tail section of the box, parts you will need are excluding speedo drive are.

1 a BW35 bellhousing from a stag a auto gearbox engine back plate and gearbox drive plate/flywheel.
2 a ZF4hp22 gearbox complete with torque converter ( if you use LDV or BMW you will need the rear drive flange from a JAG box as the bolt pcd are the same as a stag)
3 gearchange assembly ( be that stag, bmw but I favor the jag one)
            4 gearchange suround
5 suitable gearbox mounting bracket and exhaust mouting bracket
            6 oil cooler and pipework
7 start inhibitor switches and wiring plus a reverse switch
8 propshaft ( the stag bw65 is the correct length for the bmw and jag boxes)
            9 kickdown control linkages
I think that covers the parts required, but now you have to fit them all together. I think that is still on one of the threads on here, you will need to know a good machine shop and welder, unless you have a lathe and other equipment yourself.

            Les.
