    Steering column removal.

The top bearing in my column is definitely gone and needs replacing so I decided to remove the column and inspect it generally while it was out of the car. Everything I read said a 30 minute job - don't you hate it when it says that and 2 hours later you're still struggling ?

Anyway, I'm stuck tying to break the joint between the bottom of the column and the intermediate shaft, it just won't budge no matter how hard I pull the column.

Any bright ideas on braking the joint appreciated.

If I can't get it loose is it difficult to replace the top steering column bearing with the column in place ?

    Thanks,

    John.

I have had to remove the bolt from the top intermediate shaft UJ coupling (just inside the engine bay) and then tap an old screwdriver into the slot to spring it apart enough to release the grip.

      Hi John

........ is it difficult to replace the top steering column bearing with the column in place ?

I had a go at this with mixed success through my own ham-fistedness. See the thread http://socforum.com/forum/showthread...+column+bushes

      Cheers

Just checking - you HAVE released the bottom column mounting?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Thanks for the ideas, I did eventually manage to get it apart with a combination of WD40 and and a big hammer.
Now to see what else needs replacing apart from that top bearing.

WD40? You didn't say the steering column was soaking wet!
