Screechimg noise - Alternator belt slipping ?

I'm re-commissioning my recent purchase as it has been stored and hardly used in the last 12 years. I've started with a full service but when it's running there is a screeching noise which I think is from the front of the engine, stops on tickover but blip the throttle and it starts again. I've replaced the air-con drive belt but I'm thinking the alternator belt is slipping as it's warm after turning engine off.

o a couple of questions - has anyone else had this noise - if it was water pump failing would it be a different sort of noise ?
    - replacing the alternator belt looks a pig of a job, any tips ?

When it screeches again, pour some water over the belt, if it stops then it needs tightening.

If it's not the belt, give your viscous fan blades a flick, if it moves more than 1/2 a turn ish, the screeching could be from the coupling.

Hi I have always been told (and tried) spray suspect belt with WD40. Miraculously stops slip for several days! Airco drive belt - surely unusual on UK spec cars? Possibly power steering drive belt particularly if it gets worse at full lock?

Could also be the power steering drive belt, although that is more likely to happen when you turn the steering wheel.

The alternator belt (if that is it) can be made worse by turning on the headlights - more load on the alternator.

My advice about water on the belt was to ascertain if it is the belt or the pulley, it will not fix it.

If it needs adjusting, then it needs adjusting adding to it doesn't make the problem go away.

thanks for the replies and advice. Fitted new alternator drive belt and all seems well. The other belt I fitted was the power steering belt NOT air-con. Everything now seems to be working, incl electrics (except interior lights) so when I've finished the service it will be MOT time.

                  Hi Scotty

can you remeber wich make/article no. of alternator belt you used?
I have a screaching p/s belt. Altough I bought it from a reliable Stag shop I was told it had the wrong section.
Don't want to repeat that for the alt. belt.

                  cheers Hans

If I remember correctly I got the belt from Rimmer Bros in Lincoln.

I don’t want Peter to lose business, but you may well find the same parts at a motor factory locally to yourself in Germany, as they are Continental brand.
