    Stereo Entertainment System

Not easy bringing modern car entertainment in the Stag. Tough also trying to get a premium sound. Many may disagree but for me both are important. Seen quite a few of the recent stereo/speaker installation posts and I am still deciding where to place all the speakers. My goal is to retain the rear cubby/storage holes as well as the front door pockets. Of course that does not leave much option..
This car does have the (latter version) of the Leyland Australia hybrid air con installed so the center vents needed to stay as well. So that meant that a pop out screen type stereo was the best option, with prices I noticed for the head unit anywhere between $300 to $1,200 AUD (150-600 Pounds). I settled on the Aldi supermarket special which had many features all the dearer ones had: reversing camera, 7" touch screen (not hi Def but okay at that size), built in GPS, DVD playback, smart phone pairing, AV in for external video devices, remote control etc. RMS output was not that important as I have a couple of Amps to pair it with.
Wasn't easy neatly running all the wiring and I preferred nothing running across under the carpets. Tried the sill cavities where the existing looms run and then the sill holes themselves but all unsatisfactory. Running the wiring parallel with the sill seemed to look okay and not obvious.
I wanted all the boot space as well and didn't want anything under the seats so the spare has to go with the amps in its place; plus a can of flat tire foam.
Yet to buy the speakers and am not certain about the following but am thinking 100mm/4" drivers in pairs may be the only option. So two speakers next to each other above the door handles with tweeter splits sitting in the dashboard corners. Seems to be a space there that wont foul the window motor but they may need to protrude somewhat. Also for the rear another pair each side just above the cubby holes; have played with the soft top frame a bit and they may just squeeze in, not sure yet..obviously not much bass happening here yet and with what I want will be a challenge. At this point I am looking if I can mount a very small bass speaker vertically incorporated/attached to the rear seat vertical/backrest. Not much room with the folding soft top though but I will give it a try, I am thinking that soft top area with the tonneau cover down could be a reasonable bass cavity.

I have a simple but effective stereo system fitted to my Stag. It comprises the following:
One head (bald to allow airwaves to circulate freely)
Two ears (keep hair trimmed -see above)
One 3 litre V8 Triumph engine (plays tunes from 0 to 6,500 rpm)
      One twin exhaust pipe.

      Works really well

Still need to put black carpet in the boot. The sub was from a previous car doing nothing in the garage, so I thought why not..at cruising speed it really gives out a lovely deep sound. The rear speakers are new as the old ones from previous owners, were well pass their sell by date. I still want to spray the speaker covers in satin black so they are not "in your face" so much! As for the unit, found it on eBay . Its got all the modern connections with Bluetooth and sub output, but still have a retro look.
To finish the system, I also got an automatic aerial to stop idiots bending it as they walk past. If you do want such an aerial don't go for the cheapest as the reception is very poor. Middle of the range around £50 will get you descent one. As for the sat nav, most smartphones have it now. I use a phone holder on the windscreen.
It is by no means a top of the range set up, but you get an awful lot of good sound for your money.
            hope this helps
Ps: saying that, as Paul already mentioned, the V8 will always be my favourite station!

Have fitted a flat sub in the hood storage well together with a 4 channel amp. The amp is putting out 4 x 140W RMS. I don't have cubby holes so I have more easy options for fitting the rear speakers. The sub has a variable control which has its controlled under the dash on the steering column. I have reinforced the rear trim with timber framing around the speakers supported from the top rail down to the rear floor so it will take the amps they put out without activating the panel too much. The front doors have been cut to take the speakers and then reinforced with steel plate. The fronts also have tweeters. The head unit is about 8 years old now and is a DVD player but I have not connected a screen. Has two AV inputs so will play music from any device. It packs a punch! Craig

Nice work Craig, that looks fantastic!
I have a couple if nice premium amps :4 channel JVC, a 2 channel Alpine V12, both bridgeable and a mid price range moderate output Kenwood amp. Just going through the process of what is going to power what and will post the pics.
I end up with too much stuff in the car hence the requirement in keeping all the storage compartments! I have also run wiring for a spare charger, cigar lighter output if you like on the side of the rear ashtray assembly which has been trimmed that in leather instead of carpet so a bit easier to fit and keep the kids happy and powered!
Like the B post lights as well.
Anny issues in with the softop and the sub?

No problem with storing the hood. I have a power socket fitted in the boot (near side) but once you have a heavy supply cable for the amps into the hood well you have many options available. I have not re-fitted my rear console with the ash tray but that sounds like a good location for a power socket for rear passengers! Craig

That is always there! I have straight thru exhaust and if you have a great music it compliments the engine exhaust and overall driving experience. You need a decent sound system in order to have any chance of hearing it when pushing it hard!

Craig, I have had the hood out for some time and did not consider the room that is available in that cavity and if I remember correctly the hood does not sit hard up on the floor pan. I will try and measure up the approximate clearance to let everyone know. I cant tell by your photo but it does look like you have the amp under the sub? What sub did you use and are you happy with the bass output?

This is the sub I bought in 2013. It is not as efficient as the big boxed ones or tube style but you can hear it and I do adjust down from the maximum setting. It is not that bad at the traffic lights!
