Not easy bringing modern car entertainment in the Stag. Tough also trying to get a premium sound. Many may disagree but for me both are important. Seen quite a few of the recent stereo/speaker installation posts and I am still deciding where to place all the speakers. My goal is to retain the rear cubby/storage holes as well as the front door pockets. Of course that does not leave much option..
This car does have the (latter version) of the Leyland Australia hybrid air con installed so the center vents needed to stay as well. So that meant that a pop out screen type stereo was the best option, with prices I noticed for the head unit anywhere between $300 to $1,200 AUD (150-600 Pounds). I settled on the Aldi supermarket special which had many features all the dearer ones had: reversing camera, 7" touch screen (not hi Def but okay at that size), built in GPS, DVD playback, smart phone pairing, AV in for external video devices, remote control etc. RMS output was not that important as I have a couple of Amps to pair it with.
Wasn't easy neatly running all the wiring and I preferred nothing running across under the carpets. Tried the sill cavities where the existing looms run and then the sill holes themselves but all unsatisfactory. Running the wiring parallel with the sill seemed to look okay and not obvious.
I wanted all the boot space as well and didn't want anything under the seats so the spare has to go with the amps in its place; plus a can of flat tire foam.
Yet to buy the speakers and am not certain about the following but am thinking 100mm/4" drivers in pairs may be the only option. So two speakers next to each other above the door handles with tweeter splits sitting in the dashboard corners. Seems to be a space there that wont foul the window motor but they may need to protrude somewhat. Also for the rear another pair each side just above the cubby holes; have played with the soft top frame a bit and they may just squeeze in, not sure yet..obviously not much bass happening here yet and with what I want will be a challenge. At this point I am looking if I can mount a very small bass speaker vertically incorporated/attached to the rear seat vertical/backrest. Not much room with the folding soft top though but I will give it a try, I am thinking that soft top area with the tonneau cover down could be a reasonable bass cavity.
